Jack Lai
1929 - 2020

With heavy heart we announce the peaceful passing of Jack Lai at Markham Stouffville Hospital in Toronto Canada on May 25, 2020. A few days prior he made his last dash to go to the casino despite their closure.

Eternally optimistic and perpetually smiling, Jack’s love of fast food (Toonie Tuesday; Wednesday Whopper) was only matched by his passion for Coca-Cola which he shared at every opportunity. Known as a charmer, athlete and gambler, Jack’s perpetual good luck was also legendary. He survived multiple car accidents, quadruple bypass at 78, hip replacement at 89 and other mishaps with nary a scratch or dent in his positive demeanour.

Jack was beloved husband of Lily, father of Graeme (Madi), Diane (James) and Estelle (Marty) and Goong Goong (grandfather) of Jessica, Aiden, Jack and Abby. Jack touched many people’s lives, he is remembered as an exceedingly kind and generous person who always went out of his way to help others. His infectious smile and positive demeanour will be missed by all who knew him.

Jack’s mantra is wisdom for us all. “You just have to enjoy life and take it easy.”

Special thanks to the staff and medical team at Markham Stouffville Hospital who took wonderful care of Jack during his hip replacement surgery and during his final hours.

Jack was a gentle soul who was always kind and friendly to us kids who used to monopolize his basement at the house on Farm Greenway back in the day. I am saddened by his passing, but heartened to know that he lived a good, good life, and raised some amazing children.
He will be missed.
