My childhood is full of wonderful memories thanks to the substantial role my grandfather played in it. Through him, I learned the joys of the simple things in life - daily summer walks to High Park to visit the animals in the zoo and fish in the pond, and the deliciousness of fresh bread and kobassa from Future Bakery on our walk along Bloor Street back to the home he shared with my Baba. He taught me that our Ukrainian heritage was one to not only be educated about, it was one to celebrate. Indeed, no one could be any prouder than my grandfather when singing along to Ukrainian songs about the country’s strength and freedom.

I also learned what it meant to have a strong, positive male role model in my life. Through my grandfather, I saw selflessness and sacrifice for one’s family, and what unconditional love truly looked like. He loved his wife, his children and his grandchildren with all of his heart. I’m truly blessed to have had him as my Dido.

For these reasons and many more, my husband and I decided to name our son after him. With any luck, Dido’s kindness, values, sense of humour, and strength of character will carry on through our son.

Thank you, Dido, for your influence and love. You will be missed but definitely never forgotten.

Love,
Natalie (Natalia)

Dear Dad,
Thank you for being my dad, you raised me the best way you could, and I came out just right. I love you deeply even though I've been so far away--my heart is not. I appreciate you for who you are--and you taught me some good habits...I still think & quote things that you told me, and taught me along the way. I'm not by your bedside, but my whole being is with you. If I was there, I would hold your hand, and tell you how much I love and appreciate you my dear father. Let this lifetime go, with peace and love and knowing that you accomplished some beautiful things, and you are very loved dear Tato. You taught me that a man can cry, and that was beautiful; and boy did you love to dance, and I admired that you walked everywhere for fitness and strength. Your cooking skills were great, and you cooked us many a meal when we were growing--thank you. In hind site, I appreciate that we spoke Ukrainian and good for you for sticking to your guns.
