In memory of

Ingrida Fogels

March 10, 1920 -  May 22, 2017

Ingrida Viksna (nee Reneslacis, later Fogels), born on March 10, 1920 in Riga, Latvia, lived a long life full of adventure and accomplishment. She left us at age 97 on May 22, 2017. Ingrida was a writer, editor, translator, publisher, novelist and poet. Ingrida was at the same time a warm and wonderful mom to three children, Aija, Uldis and Egils. She was passionately committed to her Latvian community, and to precision and excellence in writing. She began publishing prose and poetry in her early twenties, producing six collections of poetry, two novels, a collection of short stories and many articles and essays. Ingrida grew up in Riga and studied at the University of Latvia until 1944. Fleeing communism, she left by fishing boat for Sweden in March of 1945. She met her husband Janis Fogels in Stockholm, where they started a new life together. With two little ones, very few belongings and no English skills, they arrived in Toronto in 1951. Ingrida became the editor of the North American newspaper “Latvija Amerika” in 1952, and remained at its helm for 10 years. She worked at the Toronto Public Library for over two decades, and then returned to edit the newspaper at age 73, overseeing the publication until she turned 90. She received many honours during her career, including the Order of the Three Stars awarded for meritorious service to Latvia. She surrounded herself with art and music whenever she could. She championed and supported her seven grandchildren and, in the last decade of her life, loved visiting with her eight great grandchildren. We will miss her rambunctious spirit, her force of character, her mischievous sense of humour. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 29, 2017 at York Cemetery in North York, with visitation at 1:00 pm, followed by a service at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, our family would be grateful for donations to the National Library of Latvia or to "Latvija Amerika" to honour her memory.
