In memory of

Hyung-Chul Kim

October 23, 1939 -  March 7, 2018

Hyung-Chul Kim, born Oct. 23, 1939, died peacefully on March 7, 2018 at Sunnybrook hospital. He will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife, Kyong; two daughters, Elena (spouse Allan), and Julia; his son Edward (spouse Alisa); and his beloved grandchildren, Michael, Jeremy and Eliot. He is also survived by his brother, Hyung-Chan Kim, and his wife's sister, Kum-Yun Ahn and his nieces and nephews.

He lived a hard life but had many things to celebrate.

He was born in Hamgyong Namdo, North Korea. As a child, he was taken with his brother by his uncle at the beginning of the Korean War to live in South Korea for safety, thus separated from his parents. He was reunited with his sister in Seoul after three to four years and entered university. His studies were interrupted by three years of military service. He completed a BA at Dong-Kook University upon his return. Unable to secure work in Korea, he accepted a three-year contract to work in the mines in Germany. During this time, he met and married a kind and gentle nurse, his wife of 51 years. They immigrated to Canada and raised three children. He started off life in Canada as a factory worker, adapting to a new language and culture. Eventually, he earned enough money to purchase a business to operate with his wife. Retiring at the age of 63, he was finally able to enjoy life, spending more time with family and friends, and golfing.

He loved to be with people, valued family immensely and adored his grandchildren. He contributed to his community in various board member positions including presidency of the Dong Woo Association and Domin Association.

We are grateful to God for his life and the legacy of devotion to family. We are also thankful to our friends and family for their support during this difficult time.
