In memory of

Hoi Tok (Todd) Chan

December 25, 1938 -  August 8, 2017

Hoi Tok (Todd) Chan passed away bravely and peacefully on August 8, 2017 at the age of 78, with his family by his side. He was the devoted husband of Marianne who he met in high school in Hong Kong, the loving and supportive father and father-in-law of Diana, Jennifer and Michael Garrity. He was also the proud and generous grandfather, affectionately called “Goong Goong”, to Jake, Jordyn, Dylan and Tyler. Todd also lovingly considered Peter Anglin as the newest member of the family.

Always the academic, Todd earned his Bachelor and Master of Civil Engineering at Queen’s University and PhD in Civil Engineering from University of Toronto. He worked for many years at Ontario Hydro, Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Transportation. Never one to sit still, he went on to teach at the Hong Kong Technical College. After retiring from his teaching career, he spent many years volunteering with the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. He loved his many trips to China working to build Canadian-Chinese relations for the engineering society. His family will always be grateful for his passion for being the family accountant and financial advisor and his commitment to their security and well-being.

Todd really enjoyed travelling and especially loved his sixteen cruises with the family. One of his greatest pleasures was taking his whole family on the annual Chan family cruise and building memories that will be with them forever. Nothing was more important to Todd than the happiness of his family. His unconditional love and support will never be forgotten and he’ll be so deeply missed every day.

Visitation for friends and family will be held at Elgin Mills Funeral Centre, 1591 Elgin Mills Road East, Richmond Hill on Monday, August 14, 2017 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. A private funeral for family will be held on Wednesday, August 16. In lieu of flowers, his family wishes for donations to be made to North York General Hospital, where Todd received the most kind and compassionate care during his last days.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to everyone for their love and support over the past few months.

My condolences to the wonderful Chan family. Mr. Chan's soulful eyes will continue to sparkle as they peep out of lovely Diana's face.

Thinking of all of you and sending love. Such beautiful words for a kind and generous man. I know he will be greatly missed by his wonderful family. May his memory be a blessing.

Todd and I were introduced by Diana as she saw our shared interests in Mandarin, Engineering and our kindred spirits. We met for lunch and corresponded by email, sharing photos links and pics. I don't know what Todd's interest was in me, but mine in him was, in addition to him as a person, his uncanny similarity to my father...both in manner, interests and enthusiasm to explore ideas. I am very sorry he has passed, but very glad to have met and interacted with him...and thankful for the unexpected effect of bringing my long deceased father a little closer. J

We were so fortunate to have met Mr. Chan. He was such a kind and warm presence when he was with his daughters and grandkids. The pride and love he felt always filled the room. I often tried to sneak in there as a third daughter but somehow he figured out the math. How lucky those girls were to have such a wonderful role model for a parent and a spouse. He will be fondly missed.

My deepest condolences on your loss. I know how many wonderful memories you shared and how close the family was. Your photo's and laughter on cruises come to mind when I think of your father. Big hug and our thoughts are with you.
