In memory of

Eleni Vlachos

October 31, 1935 -  August 25, 2016

My mother Eleni was born in Greece in a small village. She had lost her mother at the very young age of 8. This may have been why she was so nurturing and sensitive. Either way she was well loved by all from a young age. Although her father remarried, her siblings and her left their childhood home and moved to Athens. At 14 she started a new life there. My mother and her sister were exceptionally close, one of my mother’s favorite people. They worked hard and it was there in Athens where she met my father. They were friends up until my father left for Canada, where my mother never thought she would see him again. Shortly after arriving to Canada my father began a serenade of romantic love letters promising to her a great life if she decided to leave everything in Greece and come to him. A new love was born that was flourishing from nothing but a friendship. Months later she came and Sotos was prepared to greet her with a new home on the Danforth and a hopeful future. She did not have many friends here but it turned out that Theo, my father’s brother was to be one of her closest friends. In the last years of her life, just mentioning Theo's name would lead to a guaranteed smile from her and a look of genuine love. My mother loved her family. She taught us many things but most importantly was to accept people the way they are however difficult. Kindness came naturally to her. Even when times called for retaliation and conflict she always maintained a sense of calm and peace. Our mother was patient and generous. She always knew what to say to us to calm us down or help us out, and if she didn’t she would apologize and just sit with us. I believe her faith in God kept her calm and humble.

I believe all the lessons she tried to teach us will come out in our lives. Interacting daily with our children, friends and strangers that we meet along lifes path. We will remember the little things she passed along to us. I believe her life will be a great reminder to us to strive for the patience, humility, love and kindness she has taught us in her life.
Eleni lovingly leaves behind her dedicated husband of 50 years Sotos.
