In memory of

Helen Kertesz-Agh

July 5, 1944 -  June 9, 2023

Time on earth has ended for Ilonka (Helen) Kertesz-Agh. She passed awayJune 9th, in palliative care of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Ontario.

Born July 5th,1944 in the midst of war, in the combat for the city of Budapest, Hungary. The daughter of Janos and Gisella (nee Nylas) Czulak survived through this turbulent time beating the odds. She is survived by her brother Miklos Czulak, his wife Eva and their two sons, in BudapestHungary. Also survived by her stepdaughter, Agh Andrea, her husband Bob Weidner and children Elias and Mason in Maple, Ontario.
She will be missed as well by her extended family in British Columbia. Her stepdaughter Kathy Domina and her daughter Michelle Domina Gagnon (Phil), sons Logan and Jake in Nanaimo, British Columbia . Daughter Mary Domina and sons Noah, Declan and Kielen in Victoria, British Columbia.

Helen always said, she was so very lucky to be alive. Lucky to have had the love and support of two men. Her first husband, Otto Kertesz (deceased), who she enjoyed traveling with to many wonderful places. Steve Agh, she met while waiting for immigration approval to Canada. They lived in Toronto and worked together delivering the Toronto Star newspaper in the early morning hours, 7 days a week. Later they moved to a century old farm house Steve had working together running the Anderson House B & B. Helen enjoyed art and in her younger years loved to draw and paint. Her passion was cooking recipes from her many cookbooks, French cuisine to fancy breakfasts for the guests of the B & B. You were always treated to a fantastic gourmet spread as a guest at their home.

They returned to Toronto when Steve was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She took the role of primary caregiver until he passed in 2019. Helen missed Steve dearly.
Helen first battle against breast cancer was in 2011.
She received a diagnosis of breast cancer that metastasized to other areas of the her body in 2021. She continued to visit with her stepdaughter’s family weekly. She did treatments with little trouble and was driving still in her last 3 weeks. As she used to say, “What can we do? That is life.” Go in peace, it’s time to rest now Helen.

We are grateful and thankful to her doctors. Her family doctor, Dr. Meglis, Sunnybrook doctors, Dr. Tseng, Baetz-Dougan and Selby, nurses Macy, Shelby, Jasmine, Margaret, Marcus, and others, pharmacists and all the strong compassionate palliative team at Sunnybrook for guiding, supporting and caring for Helen until her death.

In leu of flowers the family requests kindly that donations in her name be made to the Odette Breast Cancer Centre or the Palliative Care Unit both of which are at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Select a program from this pages drop down list.

Dear Helen,
I will always be grateful to you for taking care of my stepdad, who was a real father to me, in every sense of the word. Especially, in his final years, you devoted yourself to being his primary caregiver. I know it wasn’t easy at times, but you were always there for him. I am truly thankful! You can now join him! Rest in Peace, Helen! ❤️
