In memory of

Harjit Singh Dhillon

October 1, 1927 -  November 24, 2023

Harjit, devoted husband to Lydia (nee Stschoka) for over 66 years, and loving father to Delaire, Nicolas (Paula nee Morrison), Corinne (Russell Finley, deceased), and Larisse (David Brown), left us on November 24th, 2023, in his 97th year. Proud and loving Grandpa to Paulina, Helene, Jasmine, Nicolette, Riley, Alexa, and Nikolas.

Born in Jhabal, Amritsar, Punjab, India, Harjit attended Pilani Institute where he was a top student and captain of the varsity soccer team.

Harjit immigrated to Toronto in 1954, and met Lydia a year later through family friends. They celebrated their marriage at The Old Mill in 1957.

Harjit became an engineer and worked on the Bhakra Dam project in northern India before immigrating to Toronto. In 1963, he began his long and successful career with Aecon, initially as chief engineer for the Foundation Company of Canada, becoming President in 1986. Harjit was a visionary who had a passion and gift for leading hydroelectric construction projects. Some of his most notable projects included the Kettle Rapids and Long Spruce Hydroelectric Generating Stations in northern Manitoba, an underground hydroelectric powerhouse in Quebec, and the Revelstoke Dam and Powerhouse in British Columbia. At age 65, with the energy and enthusiasm of a man half his age, he spent the next 15 years leading the Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Dam and Tunnel project in a remote area of northern India.

A well read and witty conversationalist, Harjit enjoyed history, current events, soccer, travel, and most importantly spending time with his family and friends.

Visitation to be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery and Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, on Sunday, December 3rd, beginning at 12:00 pm, with funeral at 12:30 pm, and reception to follow.

My condolences and deepest sympathies to Lydia and family.

I had the privilege of working with Harjit over the course of the Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric project.

He was a calming leader and provided sound guidance whenever things got bumpy.

A gentle and kind man. I’m sure you will miss him dearly.

Dear Dhillon family,
My sincere condolences to all. I have the great pleasure of working with Larisse and Nicolette, both amazing professionals and people. After reading the summary of an incredible life for their dear father/grandfather, I can see the legacy is strong. I can imagine the pride he felt for these two strong and talented women.

Death leaves a hole for those left behind, even when the life lost was long and well lived. May you grieve and celebrate his life together and may it provide some comfort.
And most of all -- may his memory serve as a blessing always.

Sincerely, Lisa Griffin Vincent
