In memory of

James Terence (Terry) Hanes

September 25, 1922 -  January 14, 2019

Terry Hanes passed away peacefully in his 97th year. Beloved husband of Vi, loving father of Carolyn Major (Doug), and the late Barbara Hanes-Kennedy (Jim), devoted grandpa of Jennifer Wilson (Mark), Katie Major-Austin (Jamie), Patrick Kennedy and Adam Kennedy; and adoring great grampy to Finley, Braeden and Isaac. He will be remembered fondly by his extended family including his many nieces and nephews.

Born in Toronto, Terry graduated from Lawrence Park Collegiate and enlisted with the Canadian Armed Forces at age 18 to assist in the war effort. After training, he was stationed in Australia and the South Pacific for the duration of WWII where he installed and maintained radar and radio equipment, gathering radio messages from the region and transmitting them to the allies. He completed an engineering degree (U of T) in 1950 and went on to be employed at General Electric and Canadian Arsenals (5 years) before embarking on a long career in education, retiring in 1982 as a Superintendent of Schools for the Etobicoke Board of Education.

A man of many interests, Terry enjoyed playing the bagpipes for many years in the Richmond Hill Legion Pipe Band, donating the proceeds from his solo engagements to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation in memory of his daughter Barb. During his long and active retirement, he continued to view life as an endless educational opportunity enjoying many years of travelling, a love of electronics and computers, teaching bagpipes to young people, learning French, playing the organ as well as the bagpipes, writing his memoirs, exploring world history, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service will be held at a future date.

I remember Terry from my relationship with Carol and Doug Major and from the former Etobicoke Board of Education where he was a superintendent and I was a beginning teacher.
Terry was one of the first people to welcome me when I joined the board in 1974. At the board he was respected for his competence and loved for his warmth with people. Terry was an example of great leadership and was regarded with admiration long after he retired.
Memory of Terry will continue with all who knew him.

We exchanged e-mails at Christmas and everything seemed fine. This week I had an e-mail from
Diane Salter and we always mention the days we worked for and with Terry. He was such a fine gentleman and we both had many happy memories. I'm pleased to hear that he didn't have a lot of suffering to go through. I also remember being at their home and how generous both Vi and Terry were with all of us.

I first met Terry at the Radar Training Center in Kingston in early 1941, and even then his bag pipes led us on many route marches.
In Post war years had opportunity to see his many skills in leading he annual Can Radar Association reunions and the publication and editing of our magazine Radar Reflection .

My condolences to Vi and family

Terry had many responsibilities as superintendent as he was in charge of 4 year and 5 year programs and all of the different technical subjects for the city of Etobicoke.
He also administered the Night School Program (2000 plus students).
I considered him as a mentor and a friend and he will be sadly missed.
