In memory of

Gunter Gad

February 26, 1939 -  September 12, 2017

Gunter was born in Nurnberg, Germany, and passed away peacefully on September 12th 2017, in Toronto. He will be missed by his wife Leila (nee Coupland), daughter Katherine (David Beaton), son Karl and grandsons Alexander and Samuel Beaton. In Europe, he leaves friends and family including brother Otmar, nephew Gunnar, sister-in-law Margrit, sister-in-law Lynne Plim and brother-in-law John Coupland.

Gunter studied political science, history, and geography at the University of Erlangen-Nurnberg, and graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1968. After further graduate work in geography at the University of Toronto, Gunter was appointed to the Department of Geography at Erindale College (now UTM) in 1972 and received his Ph.D. in 1976. He taught at the St. George campus post-retirement until 2009.

Gunter embraced life in Canada, the diversity of its people and the richness of the Canadian landscape. He was a dedicated professor, a mentor to many students, and took pride in innovative teaching. His urban trails were legendary as were his international and Canadian field excursions. Gunter was in his element leading diverse groups around Toronto or canoeing in Algonquin Park.

The family would like to thank the colleagues and friends who supported Gunter during the last seven years of living with an acquired brain injury. We are particularly grateful to the nurses and staff of Castleview Wychwood Towers who provided Gunter with such excellent and compassionate care.

No funeral. A memorial gathering will be held on November 4th in the Mt. Pleasant Funeral Centre at 2:00 p.m. No flowers please. Condolences and memories could be posted at www.mountpleasantgroup.com or mailed to the family.

Gunter, Howard Andrews and I were colleagues together at Erindale College in the 1970s. We taught an interdisciplinary urban studies course together. I, a sociologist, learned so much from these two stellar geographers. Gunter was a serious and learned scholar who could bring that scholarship to others in a human, humane and very educational way. And he was a warm and friendly man. I wish I had seen him more in recent years. He will be missed by all who knew him. My most sincere condolences go out to Leila, Karl and Katie and other members of the family.

I barely knew Gunter, but I well recall his spontaneous and enthusiastic temperament. He kindly came and talked to a class of mine abt the history of Toronto. I also benefitted from attending three classes of his on the Spadina corridor. One brief incident I can recall: we were both waiting for a bus on Davisville. I suddenly recalled that I had left my pass behind. He spontaneously offered me a ticket. I couldn't accept the kind offer because I needed other stuff that was in that same wallet (absent-minded prof) and went back to my apartment to get it. But he was a joy to chat with. I am sure you will miss him, and I am very sorry for your loss.

It was so sad to read of Gunter's passing. We have not kept in touch for many years but Marcie is in touch with Katie from time to time. Marcie works near Guelph. We have many lovely memories of knowing the Gad family.
We send our sincere sympathy to all the family.

Dear Leila and family, please accept my heart felt condolences on Gunter's passing. I will forever remember Gunter's happy demeanour, his collegiality, and his dedication to teaching and learning. I can still recall Gunter welcoming me to the St.George faculty and making me feel like part of the group. He was a true model, one I strive to follow. Professor Gunter Gad will be sorely missed and always remembered with fondness. Sincerely, Rick
