In memory of

Hermine Groeschl

July 31, 1925 -  April 19, 2018

Hermine (Hermi) Groeschl, 92, passed away peacefully, with her daughters by her side, on Thursday, April 19, 2018.

She will be greatly missed by her brother Hans; daughters Betty (Dieter) and Sylvia; grandchildren Joey (Connie), Robert (Marsha), Lina (Ramin), Richard (Jill), Frankie (Daniela); and great granddaughter’s Helena, Adriana and Agatha.

Hermi was born in Berndorf, Austria and went to school in Vienna before becoming a home economics and physical education teacher. In 1952, she and her late husband, Hans, immigrated to Canada for a new life. They spent a period in Barry’s Bay working at a lodge and farm with friends before settling in Toronto. While Hermi had several jobs through her life, a defining period for her and Hans was their time working together at the Island Yacht Club. Through the club, they expanded their network with other European immigrants and formed many lifelong friendships—many of which spent cherished winters with them in Florida.

A true nature lover, Hermi loved walks, gathering shells, watching birds and returned to Austria over the years to visit family and hike the Alps. She channelled her creativity through sewing, knitting, cooking, baking and gardening—passions she passed down to her children and grandchildren.

The family will hold a private burial. A memorial reception will be held on Tuesday May 22nd from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at York Cemetery and Funeral Centre. In lieu of flowers donations to the Scott Mission or Red Cross are greatly appreciated.

Sylvia, Betty and kids. Thinking of you all at this very sad time. Having known your mom my entire life since birth, I have so many lovely memories of her especially when we were kids playing on Dallas Road and of course the amazing cakes that she baked so frequently. I can still taste them! Your family is my family and I am feeling your immense loss as well. Wishing you all of the best as you try to get through the tough times ahead. RIP Herme

Your friends forever

I met Hans and Hermie through my husband Rudi. Hans was our best man at the wedding.in 1957. We were and are friends and "family" till this day. Our son Richard and Sylvia were born on the same day. We had wonderful times as the our children grew up. After we moved back to Germany we kept in touch and finally, when we
were retired we bought a house in Florida and spent many winters with our families there. We spent the 21st birthday of our kids together in Clearwater. There are children and grandchildren and great-gandschildren now with whom there will always be a family bond as long as I live. I will miss Hermie greatly, as I miss Rudi and Hans..

I have many memories of Mrs. Groeschl while growing up on Dallas Road. The Groeschl's lived across the street. I played often in their home and backyard with her daughter Sylvia (endless hours of Barbie, playing house in the back shed) I remember having to wear slippers when we entered the house as Mrs. Groeschl kept a very clean home. I also recall my mother and Mrs. Groeschl exchanging clothing patterns to make dresses for us kids and Sylvia and I had matching brown (fake) leather dresses...the craze at the time. Many fun years when neighbours were close and a simplier and safer time to grow up. Memories I will cherish forever.
