Grace Yuen (nee Chan)

1919-2015

Passed away on August 13, 2015 at her home at St. Paul's L’Amoreaux Centre in Scarborough, Ontario. Beloved wife of the late David Yuen (1918-1999) for 52 years. Dear mother of Vincent and Wendy (David). Survived by her brother Alphonse Chan, her sisters Irene Cheng, and Ellen Chen (Alex), and sister-in-law Annie Chan.

Grace will be remembered by her extended Yuen and Chan families – the many brother- and sister- in-laws, the nephews and nieces and the huge family tree in Toronto, Vancouver, California, Hong Kong, and Australia.

She had enjoyed a rich long life, residing in Hong Kong, Vancouver, and Toronto. Born to a family of great Chinese traditions in Hong Kong, she was highly regarded as the No. 1 sister (the eldest of seven siblings); and the de facto No. 1 Aunt and No.1 Grant Aunt to many. She did not demand but commanded respect with her indelible presence of self – her wit, her strength in character and resolve, and her adherence to traditional Chinese protocol. She was always ready to espouse her practical point of views and words of wisdom.

Grace was an extraordinary woman – she was not only well versed in Chinese culture and values with a learned observance of the old world ways, but also avant-garde as a successful business woman in the 1960’s in colonial Hong Kong. She and her late husband took a bold step to join the early immigrants to Canada in 1967 to provide their children a better education and opportunities. They all have had a fulfilling life in Canada.

Strong-willed and independent, she was true to her spirit in living life her way to the last days. She will forever be an inspiration to us all.

The family wishes to thank the kind support and good memories afforded her by family and friends, and the caregivers at St Paul's over the years.

A memorial visitation will be held at York Cemetery – 160 Beecroft Rd (Yonge & Sheppard area) on Sunday, Aug 23 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. A Buddhist funeral service will be on Monday, Aug 24 at 11:00 am, followed by a luncheon at Wutai Vegetarian Restaurant, 8425 Woodbine Ave Markham.

If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Paul's L’Amoreaux Centre through their website at: www.splc.ca, or can be sent by mail with the Donation Form available on the day of visitation and service.
