In memory of

Glen Ralph Sprague

February 8, 1927 -  December 15, 2023

Passed away peacefully at SHN, near the end of his ninety-seventh trip around the sun.

Father of Rob, brother of Joan(John), and stepfather to Brian (Janet) and Paul. “Uncle Glen” to Ros, Scott (Tracy), Steve (Linda), Ian (Sarah) and Dan (Deb), and the “four dynamos” Caleb, Malcolm, Kierran, and Duncan. “Grampa Glen” to Adrianne, Matt, Sean, Candice, Devon, Harrison, Erin, Jeff and Jordan, and just Glen to Steve and Jenine (Jake). Predeceased by wife Eleanor and second wife Janet, brothers Ern and John, son Kim, nephew Kevin, great-nephew TJ, stepdaughters Brooke and Lee Ann, and grandson Thomas.

He was a longtime, active member of Wexford Heights United Church, where he volunteered for fifteen years on the team that served breakfast to the “Out of The Cold” guests at Eastminster United. For many years he collected aluminum cans which were then “cashed in” at the metal recycling plant for money to support Habitat for Humanity builds. He and Janet attended many events with the “Saturday Nighters” social group, including “Last Night at the Proms” at Roy Thomson, and shows at the Scarborough Theatre. When Wexford Heights disbanded, he went along the street and joined Wexford Presbyterian where he attended services until the pandemic hit in 2020.

A skier in his earlier years, he led annual family ski trips to Tremblant and the Village Green at Stowe, ensuring that all of his grandchildren had the opportunity to learn to ski. He was an avid bowler and belonged to the Eastward Bowling and Social Club for over fifty years. He enjoyed golfing with his many friends, at Bangor Lodge for a week many summers, and on various holidays in Florida and Myrtle Beach, and at the annual family golf tournament. He loved to play euchre and Rook, and could barely contain his excitement upon being dealt a good hand. He did not have a poker face in cards or in life.

His working years were spent mostly in confectionery sales and merchandising with the Willard Chocolate Company, Willam Neilson Limited, and then the Becker Milk company, where he traveled to stores throughout Ontario. He could usually provide directions to anywhere in Ontario that had a Beckers store. He said that he enjoyed every minute of it. He retired in 1992.

An active, outgoing man with a booming voice, he was a good father, neighbour and friend, and was honest to a fault. A good soul, he will be missed by all who knew him.

I'll always remember him teaching me to play chess and the 1,2,3 boom! When we'd count out the moves for the pieces to move, he had the strongest hugs, the best mini golf course in his back yard and a great love for his family.

I met Mr. Sprague in recent years through his son Rob. Mr. Sprague was always a fine gentleman, an interesting conversationalist with a long sense of business history. Rob, I'm sorry for your loss, but you had his love and guidance for a long time. For this we must be thankful. Thinking of you and your family in this time of sorrow and celebration. May you be comforted by your family, friends, faith and fond memories and life lessons he taught.

I have many fond memories of Grandpa Glen from every stage of my life. From childhood to my turbulent teenage years, to now as a father. Grandpa Glen would always have wise advice that would really put life into perspective and would help guide me in the right direction. I will forever appreciate Grandpa Glen for introducing me to skiing. I remember his swooping turns as he graced the mountain with his arms spread wide like a bird. We would both laugh recalling how shocked he was when we had a surprise meeting my first time at the top of Mount Mansfield when I was with my ski instructor as child. I share the same view with Grandpa Glen; that skiing is a gift to be shared with family as this has taken me to many of the most beautiful places in the world. I, as many, when at the top of a mountain take a moment prior to a run to enjoy the view and appreciate life for what it is. I will always take that moment to thank and think of Grandpa Glen for the gift he has given me.
