In memory of

Gladys (Chestney) Anthony

October 14, 1939 -  September 15, 2023

Gladys died peacefully, surrounded by her family at Mississauga Hospital.

Born in Calcutta, she married the love of her life Ashley Anthony in 1961. In 1967, they made the difficult decision to leave India and emigrate to Canada to build a better life. They were joined later in Toronto by her much-loved mother Ivy, two of her three brothers and her sister.

Ever ambitious, Gladys pursued a career as a legal secretary in Toronto, then became a realtor in her Bramalea hometown, where she helped many new families build a future, much as she herself had done years earlier.

Family was her biggest joy, especially her grandchildren and her great granddaughter. Gladys and Ashley’s six grandchildren relished weekend visits at Mama and Papa’s house in Brampton where there was always an ample supply of laughter, playtime and pish-pash, a tasty bowl of rice, ground beef and spices.

Gladys never said a bad word about anyone. She was gently upfront with her suggestions: “Why don’t you put on lipstick and some earrings?”

She herself adhered to the principles of always looking one’s best. Even at the CNE, dressed in a tangerine pantsuit with a baby tucked under her arm and two little ones in tow, she was the juxtaposition of Vogue and motherhood.

She loved her garden, especially her prized roses; the music of Elvis Presley, Pat Boone and Sam Cooke -- and single malt scotch.

In 2022, Gladys and Ashley moved to The Shores retirement community in Port Credit, where she quickly built a large social circle, even starting a lady’s club. She was a fan of painting class and had daily menu discussions with chef Gus. She will be much missed by The Shores residents and their caring staff.

Gladys is survived by husband Ashley; children David (Wendy), Lorrayne (Keith) and Lynda (Domenico); grandchildren Trevor (Rebecca), Carolyn (Mark), Joseph, Cathryn, Cole, Emil, great granddaughter Audrey and siblings Walter (Dianne), Bonita (Francis), Ernest (Ann) and Kenneth (Charlotte).
