In memory of
Gertrude Fitzpatrick
August 24, 1926 -
September 15, 2018
Passed away at the age of 92, on Saturday, September 15, 2018. She left us peacefully after a long battle with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. She was surrounded by the love of her family. Gert arrived in Canada from Inchicore, Dublin in 1954 with husband Bill Fitzpatrick (1925-1983) and her two oldest children. One of thirteen siblings, she left her large and loving family behind to build a new life in Canada. They settled in the east end of Toronto and 4 more children followed. The family spent countless hours on the shores of Lake Ontario in Rouge Valley, Kew and Balmy Beaches; a natural substitute for the Irish seashore. She was a kind and gentle woman who had many talents, knitter, artist, baker to name a few, but was most of all an incredible mother. She filled her children’s lives with laughter and fun, colour, etiquette and above all, love. She was involved at St. John’s school, always ‘mother of the class’ for one or more of her children and her home was a place where the parish priest could drop in anytime for a cup of tea and something fresh out of the oven. Apart from part-time jobs at Eaton’s and Safeguard Drugs she was a stay at home mom. After Bill’s death she took a job with the Government of Canada and worked for about 10 years before she retired. Gert leaves behind 17 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren. She was devastated by the loss of 10 year old granddaughter Cristin Fitzpatrick in 1994. The circle of life goes on though, as there are two new additions on the way. We know there is a great reunion happening now. She will be thrilled to once again meet her twin brother Jack, who passed away in January of 2017. She is reunited with the people she loved who went before her. She leaves behind her children Bill and wife Betty, Christine and husband Gary, Maire and husband Brad, Terry and wife Sue, Kathleen and husband Trevor and youngest daughter Jacquie. Her sister Hilda, 97 sends her love from Ireland. Many thanks to the care givers who took such amazing care of our mother over the past couple of years, to the staff at Roberta Place long term care in Barrie, and all the support from individuals too numerous to mention. These people did not just care for her, they loved her. She was and always will be, loved. A celebration of Life will take place at Pine Hills Funeral Centre (625 Birchmount Road, Toronto) on Saturday October 20th at 2pm. There will be a private internment for the family preceding the Celebration of Life. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society and the Parkinson’s Foundation would be appreciated.
