In memory of

George Wan Sai Cheong

October 21, 1941 -  October 28, 2024

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George Wan Sai Cheong on October 28, 2024 at North York General Hospital at the age of 83.

George is survived by his loving wife, Margaret, his brothers Raymond (Madeleine), Roger (Monique) & Lucien
(Josiane), sisters in law Mary, Wan Han & Maria. He was predeceased by his parents Michel and Daisy, brothers Albert, Alfred, Raphael, Henri, Paul, Max, Regis and Francois & sisters Simone and Yolande.

George’s family numbered 14 siblings, 2 girls and 12 boys. He ranked 9th among the children. His father died when he was in his teens, and his older brother Paul had to help his mother continue running the family shop which was their livelihood.

George knew that he would have to work his way in life by his own means. He dreamed of pursuing higher studies abroad after finishing secondary school
Indeed he succeeded in obtaining an internship at the Royal Free Hospital, London, to start a 7 year study course in Medical Laboratory Sciences.

Thus in September 1960 at the age of 19, he left Mauritius to start a new page of his life in London.
In early 1968, he was awarded his Fellowship in Microbiology, Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

He decided to push further and emigrated to Canada, where career prospects were promising.
He settled in his adopted country in 1968, and lived for the most part in Toronto, where many relatives and friends from Mauritius had put down roots.

He enjoyed both a fulfilling career and an active social life, engaging in the many activities of the Mauritian Chinese Community.
Above all he loved his family and kept open house, always happy to welcome nephews and nieces on whom he doted.

You will be sorely missed , George. We will always remember you as a good, humble, meek, kind hearted , helpful, generous person whose friendship was a blessing.

Rest in peace in the good company of all your departed loved ones.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in George Wan Sai Cheong's honour.

A virtual livestream will be available via the tab below (Livestream) for the funeral mass at St. Edward the Confessor Parish:

Extract of George Wan Sai Cheong's message published in the Special Edition of Trait d'Union Canada-Maurice in November 2015:
"I first heard of Trait d'Union Canada-Maurice in 1994 when I was visiting Montreal and Ah-Lan (Gisèle) Tsang Mang Kin approached me for a donation towards the annual fund-raising campaign of TUCM.
Teresa Wong and her team of co-ordinators across Canada and USA deserve a very special mention for their dedication and enthusiasm year after year. I have also been very impressed with the hard work of volunteer canvassers in raising and collecting funds for such a great cause.
Mauritians and Canadians are well known for being compassionate and generous; being both make us twice as much! I am sure this year's goal will be as successful and achievable as in previous years."

Teresa
