In memory of

George Meletopoulos

August 17, 1931 -  March 24, 2024

George Meletopoulos passed away peacefully in his home on March 24, 2024 with his family by his side. Born on August 17, 1931 in Athens, Greece to Anastasios Meletopoulos and Vasiliki Papacharalampous, who came from neighbouring Zatouna and Dimistana in the Peloponnese region, George made his life in Canada.

George met his wife, Bessie Maragos, in Piraeus, Greece and joined her in Toronto where her family had earlier immigrated. It is in Toronto where their loving daughter, Anastasia, was born, educated and married (Matt Kavaler). Along with his Frank Sinatra albums, George brought to Canada his passion for the automobile, airplane (fueled by his military service in the air force) and cinema.

Self-employed, George became an amateur painter and cultivated a historian’s knowledge of classic film and an eclectic taste in music. Always current on international news and curious about the world, and with his keen wit, George drew people to him. His gentle spirit, decency and strong sense of justice sustained the admiration of friends and relatives. He was to the last serious and dignified.

George was mostly known for his infinite love for his family. His beloved wife and daughter knew devotion to last lifetimes. They will miss him deeply.

The visitation and funeral will be held at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church (115 Bond Street). After the interment in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery at 12:00 pm, friends and relatives are welcomed to the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre (Hickory Room, 375 Mount Pleasant Road) for a reception to celebrate George’s life.
