George Kiyoshi Imai

In Loving Memory

George Imai passed away peacefully on the evening of April 10th 2017 in his Toronto home alongside his loving family. He was born in New Westminster, British Columbia. He is survived by wife Eriko Mary-Lou Sakamoto Imai, his 2 children; Brian Michael Tatsuo Imai (Rose) and Gary Nobuhiko Sakamoto Imai, and grandchildren; Rachel, Joshua, Aeri and Kai. Sisters of deceased: Kyoko Yamamoto (late Frank), Lily Yamashita (late Tom), and Rose Grace (late Bob). Brothers of deceased: late Reverend Gordon Imai (Joan) and late Bruce Imai (Take). Sister in law: late Michiko (Tony).

George was an active and involved member of the Japanese Canadian community and in advocating for human rights of other ethnic groups; in this respect he was involved with the Human Rights Commission of Canada. He was the President of both the Japanese Canadian Citizens Association and National Japanese Canadian Citizens Association that lobbied the Canadian government seeking redress for the internment of Japanese Canadians during World War II. George was the President of the Japanese Businessmen’s Association. Additionally, he was appointed to the Parole Board of Canada. He attended many conferences including the Pan American Nikkei Association conference in Mexico, Peru and Brazil. He was one of the founders and organizers of the Japanese Canadian Curling Club in Toronto and helped other senior’s groups to receive grants for sports and activities clubs. At heart, he was a model train and airplane hobbyist with a passion for reading. He taught at public elementary and senior schools that had under-privileged and high-risk children to help lead them away from poor life choices and to lead productive and fulfilling lives. He was a loving, caring and selfless father, son, grandfather and husband. He will be greatly missed and loved forever.

A visitation will take place at PINE HILLS CEMETERY & FUNERAL CENTRE, 625 Birchmount Rd., Scarborough (north of St. Clair Ave. E., 416-267-8229) on Friday, April 21st from 10-11 a.m. with service at 11 a.m. Interment to follow.
