In memory of

Gary Evangelos Unitas

December 9, 1956 -  June 1, 2025

We are deeply saddened with broken hearts by the sudden passing of Gary Unitas on June 1, 2025, at Markham Stouffville Hospital. He is survived by his wife Hellen and sons, Gordon and Jason Unitas. He is predeceased by his mom, Milka Unitas, his dad, Gord Unitas, his uncles, Don and Lenny Unitas, Bill and Traiko Lovatsis, Phillip and Athanasios Ioannidis, his aunts Mary and Milka Unitas and Sopha and Bessie Ioannidis, and his cousins Lisa and Chris Unitas and Steve Ioannidis.

Gary was born on December 9, 1956, at East York General Hospital. He began his life in East York with his Baba Lexa daunting over him as he was her first grandchild. He was the eldest brother in a family of two other brothers, Chris and Paul. His family then moved to Scarborough where many joyful memories were created with his brothers, cousins and friends. Gary always allowed his younger brothers to join. They played road hockey and lacrosse and Gary served as the goalie. They would go down to the creek at Thompson Park where he would catch snakes. These snakes were later found crawling under his driveway when workers were digging to add a garage. In the new garage, they would all play wall ball. As he became a young adult, he would meet up with friends and cousins at the Coffee Shop. His one cousin, John Lovatsis, became a third brother who he spoke to every day about hockey and football. Gary was an avid fan of the Atlanta Falcons, while his cousin challenged him with the Dallas Cowboys. The family was passionate about hockey and the Montreal Canadiens. Gary went to David and Mary Thompson Collegiate and then to York University where he achieved his Bachelor of Arts.

He began working at Dun and Bradstreet in finance and would meet up with his then girlfriend, Hellen, while she was at U of T. They had met at a Wedding and married in 1982. With Hellen’s family, Gary gained another brother, Chris, and sister, Ellen. Chris would always tag along and Ellen would be looking for him. Chris and Ellen’s children and spouses became his children, as well. He created many wonderful memories vacationing with them and other close family relatives. Gary ended up converting to a Toronto Maple Leafs fan through his son, Jason. Gary also worked for Cadillac Fairview, Bell and BGIS. He liked politics and was a School Trustee at the York Region District School Board. He would finish work at Cadillac and then scurry to speak at a high school graduation where he would offer an encouraging quote. He even volunteered on the Markham Stouffville Hospital Board. He later earned his Real Estate agent license as he had a keen interest in investment opportunities and had a talent for negotiating. At BGIS, he was Director of Lease Audit and enjoyed and thrived at succeeding with his team and clients. He would call himself a “Navy Seal” even though he had difficulty walking. “Best in Class” was a motivating term he would use.

Gary was “Best in Class,” and he modeled this to his family of ALL he was very proud. He will be greatly missed, and his memory will always be cherished in our hearts forever. We believe God wanted such a good person as our Guardian Angel. His middle name is “Evangelos” which means “Angel”. We greatly thank him for being such a wonderful and caring husband, dad, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.

Everyone is welcomed to join us for his viewing and funeral service on Friday June 6 at Saints Panteleimon, Anna & Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Church, located at 11323 Warden Ave starting at 10:30 a.m., followed by burial at Elgin Mills Cemetery and lunch at Astoria, across the street from Elgin Mills Cemetery. Thank you to everyone for your love and support. May God Bless Gary.

Gary was one of the first people I met when I started at BGIS a couple years ago. Gary always took the time out to say hello to me when he came into work when I sat at the BGIS Reception Desk. We shared some smiles, laughter, and crazy stories if I worked at my other job Scotia Bank Arena how either the Leafs nailed it or lost terribly. Even though he was not a Toronto Leafs Fan I provided him with a Rally Towel and said this is for his Montreal Team for their tears and we both laughed. He always checked on me throughout the day when he would go out for a quick puff or two asking if I was okay. Now my friend you are in a place where you can ease with no more pain. Until we meet one day again with a smile or two rest in peace with you waving the Leafs Rally Towel.
