In Loving Memory of Garish Sarin
April 9, 1949 – May 3, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Garish Sarin, peacefully at home in Milton, Ontario, on May 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife Promilla, his beloved sons Shawn and Cecil, his brother Krishan, sister Niru Singh, and his many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews.
Born in Surajpur, India, on April 9, 1949, Garish was the fifth born son of Sohan Lal Sarin (Father) and Lilawati (Mother) and was raised alongside his four elder brothers (Devinder, Narinder, Ramesh, Krishan) and two sisters (Pushpa, Niru). The family later moved to Chandigarh, India where the Sarin family established their roots.
Garish studied at Punjab University in 1971, where he graduated and distinguished himself with first standing in Public Administration. He then moved to Canada in September 1974, first settling in Welland, Ontario, where he lived with his brother Krishan and sister-in-law Kamal. His very first job in Canada was at H. Salt Fish and Chips, reflecting his lifelong love of food.
On October 15, 1976, Garish married Promilla in Sudbury, Ontario. Their wedding marked a milestone, as it was the first Indian ritual wedding in the history of Sudbury, creating a wave of joy and nostalgia within the Indo community.
Garish continued his education in Canada at George Brown College and completed various adult education and business certificate programs, always pursuing knowledge and self-improvement. Professionally, he thrived across several industries—from hotel and hospitality management, where he began his career at the prestigious Royal York Hotel to becoming a top-performing salesperson at The Brick Furniture Store and in the finance and insurance industry, where he won numerous accolades including Top Salesperson of the Year in 1992.
Most recently, Garish continued his passion for entrepreneurship, owning and managing a successful business franchise in Toronto’s financial district, working side-by-side with his family. He had a strong sense of self-presentation and always believed in presenting oneself as a professional and a true gentleman. This commitment found expression in his business, where he was the owner of an upscale men’s grooming and barbershop catering to working professionals in downtown Toronto.
If there is one thing anyone could say about Garish, it was his LOVE for sports. He could be seen regularly sitting in the comfort of his sofa chair, enjoying a variety of athletic broadcasts. But as a true fan, nothing could compare to his passion and loyalty to his favorite teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Garish would often wear his favorite ‘Ti-cats’ touque on his long winter walks.
Garish also shared a lifelong passion for travel with his wife and children. He would always remind his family that the memories created through travelling together is how he would one day be remembered. His travels took him all over the world from the crisp waterfalls of Iceland to the warm beaches of Hawaii, through European tours, numerous cruise adventures, tropical vacations and many more. He was always planning and lived for the next travel adventure. True to this passion, Garish also lived throughout various cities in Canada. His life journey would take him from Surajpur to Chandigarh, Welland, Toronto, Hamilton, Edmonton, Etobicoke, Barrie, Brampton and finally settling in Milton, Ontario where he lived for the last 22 years.
Outside of business, sports and travel, Garish was a voracious reader with a deep love for fiction and political literature, including a particular fondness for Danielle Steele novels. He never missed a day of reading the newspaper and had a keen interest in domestic and international politics, staying engaged with the world through news and discussion.
A passionate and energetic man, Garish enjoyed a variety of physical activities throughout his life. Among his activities, he played ping-pong, exercised at his local gym, and enjoyed golf. In his later years, he took great pleasure in long walks through Nature, at the Milton Velodrome, or along the Burlington Lakeshore, which gave him a sense of peace and calm.
Garish was a devout Hindu and a man of deep faith and values. Despite facing health challenges in his later years, he was a fighter—always determined to work hard and committed to providing for his family. He loved his wife, and was a pillar of strength for her in helping overcome her recent health challenges. He took great pride in raising his two boys, instilling a strong work ethic, discipline and to prioritize family values. Garish took a keen interest in all aspects of their lives and loved hearing stories about their travels, friends, careers and would always offer fatherly advice with love.
He will be dearly missed and his memories will live on in his family, his friends and all those whose lives he touched along his path and his life. God Bless his soul. Om Shanti Om.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Meadowvale Funeral Centre. All who knew Garish are welcome to join in honoring his life, sharing memories, and celebrating the extraordinary person he was.
