In memory of

Fung Ying Cheng 陳鳳英女士

December 3, 1935 -  June 10, 2024

Fung Ying Cheng, 89, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2024, in Toronto, surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 3, 1935, in Fuzhou, Fujian, China, Fung Ying grew up during the turbulent times of the Second Sino-Japanese War. Despite these challenges, she completed high school, which fostered her lifelong love of poetry and writing.

After marrying, Fung Ying moved to Hong Kong, where she started her family with daughters Helena, Lancy, and Linda. In Hong Kong, she made many friends and discovered a passion for cooking, which remained with her throughout her life. Fung Ying travelled extensively across Asia and North America during this period. She welcomed her fourth daughter, Siu Mee, in America, and her fifth daughter, Cathy, in Hong Kong, just before immigrating to Canada in 1974.

In Canada, Fung Ying built a rich and fulfilling life, successfully raising her five daughters, all of whom completed their post-secondary education. She naturally embraced her role as a loving and proud grandmother to her five grandchildren: Melanie, Sydney, Tia, Bruce, and Matthew. Fung Ying was a devoted Christian and a good friend to many. She continued to travel, read poetry, and cook throughout her life.

Fung Ying was known for her generosity and dedication to helping others. She played a significant role in bringing many relatives from China to Canada and aiding their successful settlement. She also supported World Vision, sponsoring several children in need to help them thrive and succeed.

Fung Ying is survived by her daughters: Helena Siu Ying Cheng, Lancy Siu Kwan Cheng, Linda Siu Pun Cheng, Dr. Siu Mee Cheng, and Cathy Ka Ka Cheng; her sons-in-law: Neill Massey, Mark Trevellick, and Richard Roesler; and her five grandchildren: Dr. Melanie Duc Bo Massey, Dr. Sydney Siu Bo Massey, Tia Ga Bo Trevellick, Dr. Bruce Bo Ming Massey, and Matthew Bo Jit Roesler.

Fung Ying’s resilience, generosity, and moral principles will be remembered by all who knew her.

Fung Ying Cheng (Mama) was a beautiful, kind, woman. My best memory of her was one time when I was babysitting Melanie, Sydney, and Bruce, she took us for dinner one night. She ordered 'Caucasian' Chinese for me and I loved her for that.

I am truly sorry for your loss. Although I did not personally know your mother, it’s evident that she lived a long and remarkable life, surrounded by her loving family. Judging by the incredible family she left behind, I can only imagine what an extraordinary person she must have been. She embodied resilience, dedication, generosity, and compassion – qualities that I now see in Lancy. Your mother’s legacy will endure, inspiring others through each one of you. During this challenging time, may you find solace in the cherished memories you shared with her. My deepest condolences to your family.
