In memory of

Freda Rose Chopping

July 10, 1937 -  October 16, 2024

Freda Rose Chopping (nee Eastland), a beloved wife, mother and artist, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2024, at the age of 87. She was surrounded by love and cherished by her family and friends.

She was the treasured wife of the late Richard Chopping and predeceased by her companion, Don Morrison. She was the loving and devoted mother of Harold (Jennifer) and Belinda (John) and much-loved Nana of Sydney (Jacob), William and Charles. She was a loving sister of Eileen (the late John Hodgson), the late Florence (the late Donald Ballantyne), Margaret (the late Arthur ‘Bud’ Waters), Joyce (Ray Kiziak) and James Eastland (Debi). She had many godchildren, nieces and nephews whom she adored.

Freda was born in Niagara Falls into a large family that was active in the community. She fondly remembered her summers spent at the cottage with her family. She graduated from Teachers College and became an elementary school teacher. She brought her humour, creativity, compassion and lifelong love of learning to her students.

Art was Freda’s true passion. She started her art studies at OCAD in her 20’s and continued learning throughout her life. She explored various expressions of art. Oil painting held a special place in her heart, and she gifted her paintings to many which ensures that her artistic legacy will live on.

She and her late husband, Richard, created a beautiful, warm home which was filled with love, art, dogs, cats, horses, music, friends and family. There was always a fresh pie or cookies baking and eager mouths to enjoy them. She supported her children and husband in all their various sporting pursuits and was always the gentle voice that comforted and celebrated with them.

After retirement she balanced her time between the countryside, Toronto and North Carolina. Entertaining friends and family and cooking for them brought her immense joy. Her time in North Carolina was spent with her son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren and friends. Her grandchildren were her greatest source of happiness. She was actively involved in their lives and their biggest supporter in all their endeavors, always the loving Nana. She would light up when sharing stories about them.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. She will be buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery alongside her late husband, Richard. A celebration of life will be held in the future. Please visit her memorial page at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre in Toronto. For those who wish, donations can be made to The Salvation Army in her memory.

Freda, remembering the many moments we shared both in the city, in Arizona and at the farm. You brought kindness and gentleness into my father’s life, and therefore mine and for that I will always be grateful to you. Many memories of us all living together at the farm last winter. I saw those moments your family remembers - when your face lit up with a bright smile and you saw the best of any situation. I will always be grateful & remember you with great fondness. You gave me one of your paintings…the green grass at the farm, I will cherish it. Carolyn
