Faithful Servant, Loving Mother, Devoted Nurse, and Cherished Friend
Estelle passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025 at the age of 92, surrounded by love, after a courageous journey with kidney disease. Born in St. Ann, Jamaica, she was the beloved daughter of Etheline and Arthur Stewart and the middle child of nine siblings. Her life was shaped by her steadfast determination, commitment to family, and a calling to serve others—a calling that led her across oceans and into the hearts of many.
At the age of 20, Estelle left Jamaica for England to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. There, she trained as a State Registered Nurse and Certified State Midwife. In 1959, she immigrated to Canada, working first in Windsor and Brockville before settling in Toronto. She went on to build an impactful career at Toronto General Hospital (now Toronto Hospital), where she worked in emergency medicine and urology, retiring as Head Nurse of the Cystoscopy Clinic. Her profession was more than a job—it was her calling. Colleagues respected her high standards and strong leadership, while patients found comfort in her steady, compassionate care.
Beyond her professional life, Estelle was a tireless volunteer. She gave generously of her time to St. David’s Presbyterian Church for nearly 50 years, supporting the food bank and serving faithfully in the congregation. She also volunteered with the Kidney Foundation of Canada, running blood pressure clinics and educating others about kidney health. Her generosity extended internationally, with years of support to a primary school in Jamaica.
She brought the same care to her neighbourhood, serving on the Board of her condominium corporation and offering wise counsel to friends and neighbours—whether through gardening advice or the straight talk she was known and loved for. That same spirit of connection extended to her love of travel, as she explored the world with a close-knit group of friends whose companionship enriched her life and brought her lasting joy. This included regular return to her birth country of Jamaica to nurture her everlasting connection with family.
Estelle raised her daughter Jan as a devoted single mother, pouring love, strength, and unwavering support into every stage of her life. She found boundless happiness in her cherished grandson Isaiah, taking great pride in the young man he has become.
She is survived by her daughter Jan Campbell, son-in-law Jonathan Smith, grandson Isaiah, sisters Ena Stewart and Madeline Hinchcliffe, and many nieces and nephews who, along with respecting her reliable "no nonsense" personality, adored their “Aunt Estelle” and her renowned corn bread.
In her final chapter, Estelle faced her illness with the same grace and resolve that defined her life. Her family is profoundly grateful to the team at the Dialysis Clinic at Scarborough Health Network, to palliative care physician Dr. Michael Borchuck, the compassionate and dedicated staff at Yee Hong Hospice and Bridgepoint Hospital. A special thank you is also extended to those who cared for her at home, offering comfort and dignity in her final years.
