In memory of

Lavern "Vern" Sutton

May 23, 1932 -  May 2, 2019

It is with heartfelt sadness the family announces the passing of Elwood Lavern “Vern” Sutton, on Thursday, May 2, 2019 in his eighty-seventh year. He passed peacefully at Lakeridge Health Oshawa with his wife Getra (nee Petherick) by his side.
Lavern was born May 23, 1932 in Fenelon Falls Ontario.
For more than 30 years, Lavern managed the Blackstock Arena. Many would remember him driving the Zamboni, preparing the ice for curling and tending the snack bar. For many years in Nestleton he was the Moto-ski snowmobile dealer providing sales and service. During the summer months he could be found operating his Sutton Sand and Gravel business. He had a degree in Small Engine Mechanics, a knack for fixing, rebuilding anything and was more than happy to share his passion with others. He was a quiet man with a strong presence, great sense of humour and profound kindness. He was the man you were honoured to call your friend and a hero to his family as he was always there when you needed him. Some of our fondest memories are a garage filled with gas, oil and blue smoke, fixing our cars and always having the tools and the part you needed “in the bus”. He loved his 3 ply Kleenex, stewed tomatoes and Black Cherry ice cream on his second piece of pie. Thank you for always being there for us in the good times and the bad. You are loved forever, these memories and many more will never be forgotten.
Predeceased by his parents Carmen and Ameda (nee Hogg), his brother Keir, and nephew Steven.
Beloved husband for sixty-five years of Getra (nee Petherick). Proud dad of Bruce, Donna (Rick), Jeff (Pauline), Debbie (Scott), Lynda (Dean), and Scott(Sulana). Loving grandfather of Stacy (Trevor), Halley, Sandra (Brian), Tiffany (Jeff), Kevin (Lindsay), Riley, Carson, Brian and Ava. Also missed by his great grandchildren, Taylor, Austin, Cassidy, Rylan, Sophie, Spencer and Sienna. Survived by his loving sister Marlene (George), his sisters in law Gail, Ora (Orval) and many other relatives and friends.
The family extends a sincere thank you to the nurses and staff of C7 wing of Lakeridge Health Oshawa for their compassionate care.
A private graveside service will be held at the Rosemount Cemetery in Peterborough Ontario.

My Dad
A great man, one I loved so very much..a husband, dad, grandpa, great grandpa brother uncle and friend to many.
We all have our memories and a here are few of mine
-opening the breezeway door to snowmobiles-the smell of gas and oil, blue smoke while he worked on them in the garage,
-sharing mother’s pizza in his truck just him and I
- taking me in the truck to work
- seeing him with pink cheeks being rolled out of heart surgery
-his patience when I smashed snowmobiles and his trust to let me hop on the next one..if it wasn’t for us having snowmobiles I wouldn’t have met my husband.
-cutting wood and more wood - he loved a roaring fire
-always helping us - from gravelling driveways, fixing cars and always having that tool or part you needed
- teaching me to use mirrors when backing up his dump truck....a lesson I should have listened better on.
-3 ply Kleenex, stewed tomatoes and ice cream
- the look of worry and then relief when I got sick and when I visited after surgery - always asking how I am feeling
- bringing me home a package of good and plenty In his lunch pail when he worked at gm.
-special times at the arena shared with Sandra working in the snack bar
- insisting I take his scooter
- Enjoying easter at Sandra’s
- being the toughest person I know getting needles in his eye gives me courage all the time

But my favourite memory of my Dad is one I cherish that happened on April 30th when I was at the hospital and he was in bad shape. I had been siting beside him with my hand on his chest. I told him how much I love him and that I was one of the luckiest girls in the world. With all the energy he had he put his frail arms around my arm..I knew he heard me.

My dad wasn’t perfect but he was perfect to me... thank you for being my dad and standing by in in the good times and the bad. You are loved forever and these memories and many more will always be with me.
