Elvia Lorraine Spence (Currie)

July 31, 1935 - May 21, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear Mom.

Elvia grew up in North Toronto as the 6th of 7 children to Harold and Gladys Spence. She graduated grade 13 with honours from North Toronto Collegiate. Despite a desire for higher education, like most women of her era, Elvia married and had 3 children. After raising her children Elvia took a chance and started what became a very successful business importing and wholesaling leather goods from all over the world. The business gave her the opportunity to travel to many places in Europe and Asia.

Elvia continued her business until a cancer diagnoses resulted in the loss of one of her lungs in 2000. She was very proud that she was able to recover and thrive on one lung for so many years. One of her doctors always started their conversations with reminding Mom that she was his miracle patient!

Later in life Elvia enjoyed Blue Jays baseball, Leafs hockey, scratch tickets, casinos and the lotto…but mostly she was always about family. Nothing made her happier than having her family around her, especially for the holidays.

Elvia leaves behind her children Cathleen, Spence and Scott (Cathy), her grandchildren Peter, Michael, Catherine-Anne, Robert and Sarah-Jean and many nieces, nephews and cousins. We miss you Mom, you will always be with us.

A celebration of life will be held at Thornton Funeral Centre Sunday July 6th at 2pm.

My Deepest Condolences Cathleen, Spence & Scott(Cathy) & families, as you all know I knew your mother for years and enjoyed working with her also. She was a strong, passionate, loving person and took care in all she did. She was curious to know and learn things and continued to love to be up on everything. Her support was always there for anyone and believed in social justice for all. She was a great person to have known. My deepest condolences to you all at this difficult time. I will unfortunately miss the service but know I will be thinking of you and sending healing thoughts and prayers and may you find comfort in all your memories. Your mother's love will always be with you. Sending hugs, love and prayers, Patricia & family.
