In memory of

Elsie Florence Coish

January 16, 1922 -  April 18, 2018

Florrie passed away, peacefully, surrounded by family at her beloved home, The Dunfield Retirement Residence, on April 18, 2018.

She was predeceased by her loving husband (our dear old Dad), Harry Oswald.
She is survived by her son Ian (Sue Praties), Susan (Michael Kerr), Barb (John) Tinker, grand children and great grandchildren Jenny (Jamie) Jeremy, Inoue & Adeline, Jason (Amanda) Kenna & Raiden, Cory (Laurie) Kylie & Chase, Ashlee (Mike) Preslee & Brynlee, Matthew (Amber) Kate & Paul, Adam (Nicole) Baby Boy Tinker, Heather & Jamie and many much loved nieces and nephews.

Born in Main Point, Gander Bay, Newfoundland in 1922, Florrie became a teacher to earn the tuition and costs for Nursing School in “Canada” at Toronto General Hospital. There, she joined her beloved cousin Verna and forged many precious, life-long friendships. Upon graduation, Florrie worked at TGH and later with The Canadian Red Cross Society. She was especially proud of her role as an on-site nurse when the passenger steamship S.S. Noronic was destroyed by fire in Toronto Harbour in September, 1949.

In December 1949, Florrie married Oz. They started out in Ajax and soon they were transferred to Winnipeg (Florrie’s happy place). In 1961, they returned to Toronto and settled into their family home on Dawlish Avenue, where they lived happily for over 50 years.

Florrie faced several medical challenges which she met valiantly. Sadly, her on-going health issues prevented her from resuming her nursing career. Florrie was a life-long volunteer. She delivered for Meals on Wheels, canvassed for the Cancer Society and worked in the office at Lawrence Park United Church, every Friday morning. As well, Florrie provided meals and shuttle services for countless friends, visiting or staying at Sunnybrook Hospital. Over the years Florrie thoroughly supported Oz’s business career and was often able to travel with him to many countries. Japan was by far her all-time favorite destination.

It is not widely recognized, but Florrie was the President and most accomplished member of the Right Turn Only Driving Society of Toronto!

Florrie loved Toronto and all of Ontario. She loved the bright lights and the diversity of the city and she adored drives in the country, where nature is always at its stunning best. Every day she watched the sky and delighted in the puffy white clouds outside her window.

Florrie and Oz moved to The Dunfield Retirement Residence in 2010. Although she missed Oz terribly when he passed away, Florrie enjoyed life in her sunny, spacious apartment filled with thriving plants and an endless stream of family, friends and members of the caring and competent Dunfield Team. Florrie particularly took great delight in every music and theatre presentation.

Special thanks to her loving caregivers, Rhea, Dona and Anita.

There will be no visitation. A Celebration of Life will be held at the MOUNT PLEASANT FUNERAL CENTRE, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto (east gate entrance, north of St. Clair Ave., 416-485-5572) on Monday May 7, 2018 beginning at 1:30pm. Reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, you may consider a donation to The Scott Mission or a charity of your choice.

A lovely farewell to a lovely lady! I remember several Easter trips from New Jersey to Toronto to see our Coish cousins. Florrie and Oz were such a distinguished couple and always gracious hosts. We three Moores and our descendants owe a debt to Florrie for introducing our parents and we will keep the potato salad secret! May God's peace surround and bless your family as you say goodbye to your wonderful matriarch.

My heartfelt condolences and warmest wishes to Florrie’s family. She will be missed by many, but her legacy lives on in the memories they all have, and mostly in her grandchildren and great-grand babies. She leaves behind a large and happy family which shared many years with Florrie, both in Toronto and on the lake.
Bless you all,
Lee
