In memory of

Elizabeth Joyce Hawtin

January 31, 1925 -  January 25, 2022

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Joyce Hawtin (nee Wherry). She was 6 days from her 97th birthday.

Joyce was predeceased by her husband George Methven Hawtin DDS (1995). She was also predeceased by her brothers Robert & Patrick Wherry.
She is survived by her loving children Jill (Peter) and James (Vanessa).
She was a proud and loving grandmother to Keira and Elizabeth.

Joyce started her career in dentistry where she met George, the love of her life. They enjoyed many happy years together with friends and family.

Joyce had many varied interests – a passion for golf, having spent many seasons on the course as well as tending to her gardens and enjoying flowers and plants of any kind. An avid card shark, Joyce loved playing Bridge and Rummy; always keen to teach anyone who visited a mean game of Rummy, however she had to win! She enjoyed socializing with friends, attending the theater, going to Sunday service, reading, playing Scrabble, and going for walks. One of her lifelong achievements was the completion of her Royal Conservatory of Music exams, which fulfilled her desire to play the piano. She also enjoyed sewing and knitting, or working through her crossword and sudoku puzzles. A sweet tooth at heart, Joyce loved chocolate no matter which way it was served!

Volunteering was also an important aspect of Joyce’s life. She was a member of the Ladies Golf Club of Toronto for 45 years, serving as President of the club for two terms. She volunteered for many years at St. John’s Convalescent Hospital gift shop. Joyce also contributed to her resident condo garden committee to help beautify the gardens for others to enjoy.

We wish to extend our sincere thanks to those involved in Joyce’s care over the last few years to include Barbara, Vicky, Novie and Debbie. Thanks to Dr. Alan Fegelman and Dr. Kam Tong Yeung. Additional thanks to the kind and attentive staff at Scarborough Health Network (Birchmount Hospital).

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will take place March 19th at York Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto or the Scarborough Health Network Foundation.
