In memory of

Elizabeth "Betty" Jean McQuillan

December 8, 1930 -  November 30, 2024

(née Jackson)

On November 30, 2024 Betty McQuillan died peacefully at home, surrounded by family.

Born in Toronto, Ontario to George C. Jackson & Florence Rowntree, Betty grew up in the small North York farming community of Elia. Her home was the Lonelm Holstein Dairy Farm.

After training as a teacher Betty taught at Downsview Public School until her marriage in 1954 to Robert (Bob) McQuillan. She enjoyed a long and happy marriage with Bob, over 70 years.

Bob & Betty raised their family on Ellerslie Avenue in Willowdale along with other young families. The yard provided lots of room for flower and vegetable gardens. After the children were grown Bob & Betty moved to a house on Kingsdale. Jane is currently in Edmonton, Ian (Leslie) in Hockley Valley & Nancy in Willowdale. Nancy’s daughter Anita is the only grandchild.

Betty’s interests included genealogy and local history, co-authoring books on the Rowntree family, George C. Jackson & Elia Remembered. She was a skilled seamstress, quilter, knitter, baker, canner and gardener. Bob & Betty really enjoyed Scottish country dancing together.

Both Betty & Bob were active members of Newtonbrook United Church. Newtonbrook amalgamated with Northminster and was renamed Cummer Avenue United Church. Betty was involved in the reading group which started in 1967 and the quilting group which completed over 220 quilts over many years.

Survived by sister Ann, brother Douglas (Marg) Jackson & nephews and nieces. Predeceased by her older brother George.

Heartfelt thanks to caregivers Carla, Paula, Victoria and Christine, Nurse Manu and all the Home Care providers, the Sinai Health Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care, Dr. Seto and the staff at Canterbury Place.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Cummer Avenue United Church, 53 Cummer Ave, North York ON M2M 2E5 or a charity of your choice would be deeply appreciated.

We will miss Betty very much. Our family had fond memories with Bob and Betty when we moved to the hood. She is very kind and friendly. We will miss her homemade lemon tart at Christmas. Rest in peace in the embrace of our Heavenly Father. Our deepest condolences to the family.
