It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, godmother, and sister, Eha Hess (née Korjus), on May 24th, 2025.
Eha is mourned by her sons Jaan (Mai-Liis) and Laas (Kate), and daughters Leikki (Attila) and Maiki. Her memory will be cherished by them all. Eha shared a joy-filled marriage with her husband, Markus Hess, who preceded her in death. Eha adored her grandchildren: Heikki, Mia-Liina, Viive, Raili, Leo, Helve, Hendrik, Eliise, Raivo, Ella-Skai, Talvi, and Maila.
Eha was born in Toronto on April 9th, 1954, to Alfred and Ella Korjus. She was the eldest sibling to Tiina, Mark and Eric (Connie). In her youth, Eha competed in rhythmic gymnastics and forged life-long friendships throughout the Estonian-Canadian community. Eha raised her family in Thornhill, in a vibrant, fun-filled home that was welcoming to all. She was a mother figure to many and took great responsibility to ensure people knew they were loved.
Upon the passing of her sister, Eha made sure that her niece, Teija, had all the comforts and love she deserved. She was devoted to her daughter, Maiki, who was a true bright spot in her life. Maiki’s effervescent personality is a testament to the love showered upon her by Eha.
Eha was the love of Markus’ life, and he was the love of hers. They shared a deep, affectionate bond that could be felt in their presence. Losing Markus a few short years ago was devastating to Eha, but her strength and selflessness helped her focus on ensuring that her children and grandchildren knew he loved them. Above all things, she was devoted to her family. In turn, she was their rock.
Eha was also quick to make friends - her sparkling personality, sharp wit and kindness drew people to her. As a result, she built lasting relationships in every sphere of her life, including her neighbors and former colleagues at Doner Canada, BruceMau, and Alight. Eha enjoyed social encounters, had a voracious appetite for novels, and a love for fashion and design.
Eha had a lust for life. She relished nothing more than hosting a dinner party, organizing Christmas festivities, attending the Vironia Ball, or simply being surrounded by family and friends. Every event she planned had a thoughtful, meaningful touch. She spoke often of her fond memories of ladies' weekends, both at Magnetawan and Bayfield. In the final years of Eha’s life, she completed the El Camino and traveled throughout Europe visiting Christmas markets with her sisters-in-law.
Eha took pleasure in summers at the Korjus cottage in Orillia, the Hess cottage in Magnetawan, and camping out on the final night of the Estonian camps with her friends. The end of summer was often marked with a few weeks in South Carolina, where she loved hot, sunny days on the beach, sitting by the pool, and shopping.
Eha will be missed tremendously.
Family and friends will be received on June 5th at York Funeral Centre, 160 Beecroft Road, with the service commencing at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, please hug your loved ones. Donations can be made in Eha’s name to Joekaaru through https://estonianfoundation.ca/donate-online and to Toronto Estonian Scouts and Guides: https://www.skaudigaidifond.ca/en/
