In memory of

Edward Paul Belobaba

December 31, 1948 -  May 4, 2023

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Superior Court Justice Edward Belobaba on May 4, 2023, in his 75th year. Edward was a beloved member of the legal community, serving as a Justice for 19 years. He loved being a judge, especially when hearing constitutional matters and class actions. Over his 50-year career, as a law professor, lawyer and judge, he was widely recognized for his many awards and accomplishments.

Beyond his professional achievements, Edward was a family man above all. He adored his wife Vicki of 49 years, his children Justin (Jill) and Jennifer (Dan) and his three grandsons, Ronan, William and Teddy (formally Edward). He also cherished his brother Peter (Brad) and their close relationship.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Princess Margaret Hospital. A special thanks to Dr. Zlotta and Dr. Sridhar whose world class skills added years to his life.

A tribute to Edward’s life will be held at York Cemetery Chapel on Sunday May 7 at 10:30am (160 Beecroft Rd. North York). Friends are invited to visit the family at 210 Old Forest Hill Rd. Toronto, in the afternoon after the ceremony and on Monday and Tuesday from 2-4:30pm and 6:30-8:30pm to offer condolences.

i met Ed very early in my first year of law school in 1970.Right out of the gate i knew this was someone very special - brilliant, athletic, and a wonderful friend with a great sense of humour. I thought so highly of him that within months of our first meeting, i told him, in that first year at Osgoode, that i wanted to be his partner when we graduated and were called to the bar. And then I introduced him to his then future wife, Vicki, because i thought so highly of both of them, and it seemed to be a perfect match. It was. i never heard Ed speak ill of anyone. I loved our lunches where he talked about the law, his judgments, his family and life in general. He remained passionate about his professional life - about being a judge - and that passion never waivered or waned. He was a consummate legal scholar, professor, writer and judge - a highly respected judge's judge, whose judgments dispensed wisdom instilled with humanity. Most of all, he loved and cherished his family and spoke of them every time we got together. Ed was a part of a small text-messaging group that I was privileged to be a part of. There were texts almost every day. Most of us were his former classmates. The exchanges emanating from some members of our group were occasionally of a nature that, as a judge, propriety required that Ed remain silent! My heart goes out to Ed's family - Vicki, Justin, Jill, Jennifer, Dan, Ronan, William and Teddy. For me, Ed was my dear friend for almost 53 years. I deeply mourn his passing and will miss him greatly. Richard

Was very very sorry to hear this news. Justice Belobaba was a thoughtful, hard-working and conscientious judge who greatly added to the jurisprudence on class actions and other important matters. I appeared before him many times. His hearings were always lively and punctuated by dialogue about the important issues and were never boring. You learned to expect the unexpected when appearing before him. My condelences to his family.

Ed was a brilliant Judge, with a good dose of common sense and humility. A kind and gentle friend and colleague. Ed made us all better and will be greatly missed.
