Born in the village of Skopia (Neolany) near Florina, Greece in 1927, Kata was the younger of two daughters. Raised by her mother Sevda after her father Stoyan immigrated to Canada to find work, she led a difficult life of poverty, working hard from a young age to help support her family. Through this hardship and then the sudden death of her sister Lena, Kata developed a resilient spirit that would carry her through her life.

She married her husband, Nick, in 1950 and the couple welcomed their first daughter, Christine, later that year. In 1956, Kata left Greece with her daughter to reunite with her husband and parents who had immigrated to Canada in previous years.

In Canada, Kata’s life changed for the better. She and Nick bought their first home in Toronto and made a prosperous life together through hard work and determination.

In the intervening years between her arrival to Canada and the 1970s, they welcomed their second daughter, Mary, and moved to Scarborough. During that time, Kata worked at Eaton’s and was well liked by her coworkers. After retiring, she was never idle, tending devotedly to her garden, crocheting, knitting, or embroidering. She and Nick often socialized, frequenting the local coffee shops with their friends.

Later, their daughter Christine married (George) and had two children, Jordan and Karen, who were the joy of Kata’s life. Even after being widowed in 2015, she continued to lead a full life centring much of it around friends and the family she dearly loved. “My heart is full,” she often said with a glowing smile when surrounded by her family.

Despite its challenges, Kata loved life and soldiered on even through advanced age and dementia.

She is remembered as a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend and will be very much missed by her family.
