Douglas Murray Cain
December 17, 1935 - September 2, 2022

Doug was the only child born to John (Jack) and Josephine (Dorothy) Cain. He was born and raised in Toronto attending Eglinton Public School and North Toronto Collegiate (NT). Doug started working after school delivering for a local pharmacy at the age of 12. In 1954 after graduating high school Doug started what would become a life long career at the Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB). This is also where he met Mavis Evans whom he married in 1956 and had two children, Lisa (Ian deceased) and Stephen (Leighanne). They bought a house in North Toronto where Doug had grown up and built a cottage on Sparrow Lake close to where Doug had spent his summers at his Aunt Floss’ home in Washago. Doug and Mavis split up in the early 80s and Doug later married another fellow WCB employee, Hazel Regan, in 1990.
Doug took early retirement from the WCB in 1988 and went to work for The Wyatt Co. This turned out to be a fairly brief gig followed by making Victorian style screen doors and other wooden creations with his best pal Norm Pierson. His marriage to Hazel ended in 1997 and he returned to his old stomping grounds landing in Leaside in the home where he spent the next 22 years of his life until he peacefully passed away at the age of 86. Doug was grandfather to Owen (Danyel), Ariel and Emma whom he enjoyed and loved so much and was so very proud of. Doug loved life. He had a joie de vivre that was infectious. He was kind, generous and fun to be around. He never really grew up. He felt age was just a number, it was how you felt on the inside that mattered. He smiled easily, and liked to kibitz around. Part of that generosity was in helping people. Doug met a young Hungarian girl who was cleaning houses but dreamed of becoming a Canadian citizen and a nurse. Together with her partner Lui, Doug helped them navigate the immigration process opening his home to them when they needed it and in turn they helped him out too as he was aging and could use some assistance. When Noami and Lui bought a home in Toronto and moved out they were instrumental in finding Doug an older Hungarian couple Kathy and Bela to take their place. Kathy and Bela had just left in June this year to go back to Hungary and a new couple, Cyndi and Bernie, unfortunately only got a short few months with Doug before he left us.
Doug had COPD from a lifetime of smoking. Having started as a child in the years before smoking was “known" to be dangerous, in fact his elderly grandmother took up smoking to provide him with free cigarettes, it was something he was never able to kick. Covid, while Doug never got it, was a determining factor in his passing as it took away his mobility at a time when staying mobile is so important to long term health.
Doug was loved by all that knew him. He was a good son and father, maybe not so much husband by his track record although he remained on very good terms with both Mavis and Hazel throughout his life. Doug was a special man and is sorely missed by his family and friends who love him so very much.

Doug was a multi dimensional man in so many ways. There was always much more going on in that head of his, than you could ever fathom!
I know and I speak from a loving point of view.
We worked together and then we fell in love and married. Things happen. But we remained friends right to the end.
Instead of "good night" or "see you later" to each other we'd say:
Until that time ... until that time
And now, dear Doug, once again, I say .... until that time, until that time.

Bernie and I may say that Douglas was one of a kind. He was a kindhearted person. Even for a few months being with him he made us feel like we we're family. He made sure that we are comfortable and he didn't think twice to help us and give place to lived when we needed it the most.
Thank you so much Doug for everything and to your generosity. We will never forget what you've taught us. Rest assured we will return your kindness to anyone in needs.

Lisa & Stephen & Family,

So sorry to hear about the passing of your Father (grandfather). I have long ago memories of your Dad. Well I didn’t know him well, I do remember him being very upbeat and friendly in nature.

Reading his memorial, it sounds like he will be greatly missed by all those that knew him. Sending you all my sincere condolences. I’m sure you will have some lovely memories and stories come to mind. 😘
