In memory of

Douglas Lachlan MacRae

June 17, 1965 -  August 24, 2023

Douglas Lachlan MacRae passed away at home, peacefully in his wife’s arms on August 24, 2023, after he bravely finished his 4.5 year fight with glioblastoma (GBM) brain cancer. Doug was a force of nature. He remained positive and courageous to the end. With his good humour, as an artist, photographer, motorcycle racer and globetrotter, he was determined to live life to the fullest and said after his incurable diagnosis: "Life is amazing and a privilege so keep on trucking!"

Doug was born in Ottawa, raised in Guelph and moved to Toronto where he graduated from the Ontario College of Art & Design. He launched his career during his studies with his long time collaboration with HMV Records. Doug painted large scale photo-realistic murals of musicians including Annie Lennox, U2, and Celine Dion, across their retail stores globally. His wanderlust was ignited with HMV flying Doug to paint in-person murals in New Zealand, New York city and across North America. He also painted murals and album cover designs for Canadian rock bands, Sony Music and for feature films. Doug was also commissioned to do classical oil paintings including 20-foot Pre-Raphaelite style paintings for the Liberty Grand. He won awards for Marketing magazine, CAPIC (Canadian Association of Professional Image Creators) and Lux.

He expanded his career in international travel photography and received commissioned work from various tourism boards, airlines and travel companies where he travelled to India, Peru, Kenya, Morocco, Tunisia, Italy and France.

Doug raced motorcycles for 20 years, winning at Daytona, Mid-Ohio, Barber, Mosport and becoming a three time AMA Grand Vintage Racing Champion with his Norton race bike. His passion for racing evolved into photography with various editorial features in motorcycle magazines including the cover photo for Cycle World. Seventeen of his images are featured in TASCHEN’s Ultimate Collector Motorcycles coffee table book.

Despite being given only one year to live, he was motivated to fight this most lethal and terminal cancer. Less than 7% of glioblastoma patients worldwide survive after four years. He became an Ambassador for the Brain Cancer Canada charity and used his voice to raise awareness, and donated his art to help fundraise for brain cancer research.

Doug is survived by his family who loves him immeasurably: wife, Marie Anne; father, Malcolm; brother, Duncan; sisters, Heather and Karen; sister-in-law, Stephanie; brother-in-laws, Martin and Andrew; nephews, Connor and Thomas and niece, Emily.

His Celebration of Life service will take place on Saturday, September 9 at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto, ON M4T 2V8 with the visitation starting at 11:00 am and the service beginning at 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Doug’s Brain Cancer Canada fundraising page to fight for more effective options and innovative research: https://braincancercanada.akaraisin.com/ui/douglas_macrae

I never met Doug. I believe we shared the track together a few times (vrra.ca) and other than that, have been a fan of Doug's beautiful photos of classic and vintage motorcycles forever. You contributed greatly to our world and the lives we live.
RIP Doug,.. gone too soon.

The moment I met Douglas my life changed forever, he was sleeping under his truck, his Dog, Cain was guarding his gorgeous Norton 750 Commando. As I approached, Cain made some noise and Douglas crawled out from under his truck, this was in the pit/paddock at Grattan Raceway in MI USA at a Ducati Club Track Weekend in 1997. The day before I had worn out the exhaust on my rat bike 750 Commando by dragging the exhaust around the bowl corner passing guy's on Ducati's all day long, the 2nd track day of my life. Now my bike is broken after the first session and if there isn't someone with spare exhaust parts for a 1970 Norton I'll be going home. Someone mentioned the guy up in the pit area with a Norton. Douglas crawls out from under the truck and asks if he can help. Parts, clothing, camping gear, tools, etc. literally flying out of the truck into piles and there it was a complete 2 into 1 custom exhaust for a 1970 Norton. It was in about 8 pieces I looked at it and was wondering how these parts all fit together. Douglas gathered the parts and asked where I was pitted, within minutes he had the exhaust on my bike, I kicked it over and it fired up with this loud nasty sound like I'd never heard before. I didn't even miss the next session. That night after having the most fun, we sat around the campfire with a couple of Douglas's friends, some of them were already doing vintage motorcycle racing. When I got back to Toronto I went to visit Douglas at his "Studio". UNBELIEVEABLE!! The pictures he "painted" were like photographs you couldn't tell the difference, he had 3 "Academy Awards" from the advertising business j Then I knew here was an incredibly talented artist who was brave enough to live life on his own terms, and enjoying life to it's fullest. After we joined VRRA we attended and participated in every race and track day from 1998 to 2004. If it wasn't for that chance meeting at Grattan I may not have went on to achieve some of my own "goals" including being a VRRA season champion in my class. Thank-You Douglas for being you. I wish I could have spent more time with you lately. Hopefully we'll cross paths again my friend. LOVE Johnny P.S. Only the GOOD Die Young!! Ride On Brother!
