In memory of

Douglas Graham Hall

January 14, 1931 -  September 17, 2025

Douglas Hall, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of wisdom and warmth.

Douglas is survived by his devoted wife Miriam, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and adventure. He was the proud father of Virginia (Frank), Rose, Oswin, Stephen, and Sheila (Grant). His joy multiplied with eleven grandchildren—Teri (Anthony), Tammy, Tanya, Tina (Michael), Michael, Nicholas (Nicole), Heather (Matteo), Gaia, Akasha, Anara, and Ian—and eight great-grandchildren who brought him endless delight. He helped raise some of these grandchildren, in particular Michael. He was predeceased by his twin brother Richard, with whom he shared a bond that transcended words.

Douglas dedicated nearly four decades to the University of Toronto as a Senior Tutor in Mathematics, inspiring generations of students with his clarity, patience, and passion for the subject. His intellectual curiosity extended far beyond the classroom—he was an avid reader of science fiction and spy novels, a strategic master of the Japanese game GO, and a lifelong student of Gurdjieff’s teachings.

He found joy in the simple pleasures of life such as digging in the garden, telling jokes that made everyone groan and grin, and sipping his beloved Drambuie—his “Scottish holy water.” His love of nature, mountains, sailboats, and cats reflected a spirit both wild and contemplative. Travels to England and Turkey, and reunions with his Camp Caravan friends, were among his most treasured memories.

Douglas lived with a rare blend of intellect and heart, humor and depth. His presence was a gift, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor his memory by planting something beautiful, sharing a good book, or playing a thoughtful game.

We met Doug and Miriam through my eldest brother Roger-Mochael, who'd known Doug back when he was in the Airforce in B.C. They liked to play the Japanese game of GO and visited whenever they were in Vancouver, or Toronto. When Roger-Michael was dying, from cancer, Doug would spend time playing GO with him and eventually sat by his side until his end in Sunnybrook hospital in 2013.

Fred and I would meet Doug & Mariam in Sunnybrook, and when Roger-Michael was in Orchard Villa Palliative care.for a time, before he was transferred to Sunnybrook hospital.

Later, Fred&I visited Doug & Miriam& Michael at their home on various occasions fot tea and talks.
and they in turn, would visit us in Pickering.

You were always an excellent teacher and a wonderful colleague at the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto. It was always great to see you drop in to say hi even many years after your retirement.

Mr Hall was a constant friendly presence. I hadn’t seen him in many years but I can picture him clear as day reading a book in the living room. That’s usually where I would see him when I would visit with Sheila. I’m sure we annoyed him greatly with our noise, as the music he was listening to would tend to get louder and louder. I think it was his subtle way of telling us to be quiet.
My memories of Sheila’s house were always warm and loving. It was a home away from home for me. Mr and Mrs Hall made it that way with laughter and kindness.
Mr Hall you will be missed. May you rest in peace.

We met Douglas a few years ago when he attended our Thanksgiving dinner with Virginia and Frank. Douglas was so full of life and easy to talk to, such a lovely man. He loved to talk about his cats most of all. We are so sad to hear of his passing.
Please accept our deepest sympathy,
The Keon Family,
Brian, Renee Tyler & Angela
