Dorothy Jean Dunbar

February 24, 1927 – November 18, 2018

Peacefully at home on November 18, 2018, Dorothy Jean Dunbar (née McGuire) passed away in the company of her daughters at the age of 91. Loving wife to George (pre-deceased) and sister to Howard McGuire (pre-deceased) and Phyllis Raper (pre-deceased). She will be fondly remembered by son Peter (Susan) and their daughters Melissa and Jessica (Kyle Evers); daughter Nancy (Paul Gardner) and their children Adam (Laura Avard-Gardner), Katelyn and Shawn; and daughter Ann (Rick Perl) and their children Ashley, Derek, Heather and Caroline. Loving Great Grannie to Marah, Callie, William and Paige.

Dorothy was known for her love of life, the colour pink, films, playing bingo, romance novels, knitting and her sense of style. She was always positively “fine” and almost always smiling.

For many years, Dorothy and George were committed to the Shriners and had wonderful times with the organization. Also, near and dear to their hearts was Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. They spent many years hauling a trailer 15 hours from Toronto to camp at Myrtle Beach State Park. With age, comfort prevailed and they transitioned to the Dayton House enjoying the sun and sand with family and friends. The tradition continues with her family today.

After losing George, Dorothy suffered a stroke and moved from her Downsview home of over 50 years to Amica Independent Living in Mississauga. Over her 14 years at Amica, she became an active participant in the social and event filled community and made wonderful new friends. The last 11 months were increasingly difficult for Dorothy. Her friends and “Girl Gang” at Amica were there to lift her spirits when she needed a "Boost.” A very special thank you to Audrey, Mary, Jean and all of Dorothy’s other dear friends for being there on both good days and bad.

Our family would also like to thank Dorothy’s many doctors, staff, and nursing staff at Amica and the CBI Support Workers for all of their care and affection during difficult times.

If you wish, charitable donations in memory of Dorothy may be made to Epilepsy South Central Ontario, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

Please join us for a Celebration of Life on Saturday, December 8th, 2018 at 1535 Lakeshore Road East in the condo’s party room between 1:00pm and 4:00pm.

Nancy, I remember your parents with such great affection. They always greeted us with open arms when Keith and I were hanging out at your family home in the 1970's, and never made us feel we were intruding. She was a wonderful lady and will be missed by many. Sending you and the family big hugs at this sad time.
XOXO Mimi
