In memory of

Dorothy Hilda Weir

November 17, 1923 -  December 25, 2022

On beautiful, sun-drenched Christmas Day 2022, our cherished matriarch Dorothy Hilda Weir peacefully took her leave of us from her daughter’s home in Markham, Ontario after nearly a century of a remarkable life, to be reunited with her one great love, her husband and soul mate, the late John Golden Clark Weir.

Dorothy, predeceased by her parents Albert Edward Todd and Edith Mary Palmer, was born on 17th Nov 1923 in Ripon, Yorkshire - God’s Own County - in England. She was the older sister to Betty Warren (the late Allan) who resides in Writtle, Essex and to the late Marion Ousbey (Jack) & Vera Beaumont (David).

A war bride, Dorothy met John, her Canadian fly-boy, during WW II, and out of that horrible chapter in our human history, together they created their own history of enduring love, family, friendships, philanthropy, and faith.

Saddened by their loss, but grateful for her life and example, are Dorothy’s daughter Elizabeth Jane Phillips (David, a better son-in-law she could not have scripted), and her son Martyn John (Lynn Fletcher, who combined the roles of daughter-in-law and girlfriend to Dorothy).

She will be missed by the jewels in her crown: her grandchildren Kristin Phillips (the late Peter Fraser), Adam Phillips (the remarkable Sheena Luck), and Graeme Phillips (a stalwart care-giver and support to Dorothy as the end of her journey neared). And by the great-grandchildren who so filled her with never-ending delight: Cameron & Caitlin Bennett, and Isla, Luke, Callum & Alasdair Phillips.

Dorothy would absolutely insist at this point that we offer grateful thanks to her long-term and much beloved caregiver, Tammy, who is forever now a part of our family.

With a life as well-lived and as long as hers, Dorothy was naturally blessed with countless close and enduring friendships, and she will be particularly missed at this time by her pals Janet Burnie and Lorna Wiseman, and by her very kind fellow parishioner and friend Shirley French.

Dorothy will also be remembered fondly by the TransCanada Pipelines (now TC Energy) community, of which she and John were such an integral part; by her golfing, curling, and bridge cronies at the Donalda Club; by her fellow gardening enthusiasts at fabled Milne House; and by so very many among the Anglican Diocese of Toronto, particularly by her fellow parishioners at St. Peter’s Scarborough, the church she and John helped build and which they energetically and generously supported through the decades.

A private inurnment ceremony will be held for Dorothy, where she will join her beloved Johnny at Pine Hills Cemetery in Scarborough. Details of how and when we will be welcoming those whose lives she touched to A Celebration of Life will be forthcoming.

In lieu of flowers, Dorothy’s family requests that anyone who wishes to honour her memory might consider doing so by offering a simple act of kindness to another.

Aunt Dorothy will forever live in my heart and memory for her kindness and wit. I will miss her contemplative words guiding the family on a path of grace.
