In memory of

Doris Fern Backlund

September 4, 1925 -  January 5, 2024

Doris Backlund (nee Hall), a cherished mother, gramma, and friend, passed away on January 5, 2024, at the age of 98 in Don Mills, Ontario. Born on September 4, 1925, in Cupar, Saskatchewan, Doris brought warmth, kindness, and unwavering love to all aspects of her life.

Doris is survived by her loving children, Cheryl and Alan, as well as her cherished grandchildren, Kyra and Marc (Ashley). She is preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Backlund, her parents and her brothers. Her legacy lives on not only in the memories of her family but also in the countless lives she touched through her generosity, kindness, and community spirit.

Doris was an integral part of the Don Mills community for 7 decades, earning the distinction of being an original "Don Miller". Her vibrant spirit and commitment to community service left an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to know her. She embodied the true essence of a community member, actively engaging in various local endeavours that enriched the lives of those around her.

Doris had a particular fondness for teaching and a genuine love for children. When asked about her profession, she would proudly declare herself a children's librarian, underscoring her dedication to fostering a love for reading and learning in young minds. At the Donway Covenant United Church, she taught Sunday school for many years and was an active member of the congregation. She also spent some time volunteering and working in her children's schools and was the "lunch lady" at the Toronto French School for many years.

She loved gardening, playing and watching curling, and following the hands of anyone who was playing the piano. She cheerfully dedicated her time volunteering for the Girl Guides, the Better Living Health and Community Services and the North York General Hospital (a 40-year award recipient). Her selfless contributions touched the lives of many, reflecting her deep-rooted commitment to making a positive impact on the community she held dear.

We extend our gratitude to the carers, nurses and everyone on the 2nd floor at Thompson House in Don Mills who loved and helped care for Doris in her final year.

In Doris Backlund, we remember a remarkable woman who will be forever etched in our hearts. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love and gratitude of those who were fortunate enough to know and love her.

Your Mom left an amazing amount of community involvement behind her. A life well lived, and shared with those she met along the way.

I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to Cheryl, Alan and the entire family on the loss of such a remarkable woman. I met Doris in 2001 when I joined the 323 Girl Guide unit in Don Mills. As I got to know her, I marvelled at the amount of time she devoted to her community as a volunteer and I came to see her as a mentor. She was always interested in what the girls were up to, sharing her knowledge and guidance when needed. She was the Matriarch of the unit and set an example for all of us. The only part of guiding that Doris didn’t participate in was our annual camping trip - she always said she’d had enough of outhouses after growing up in Saskatchewan! She had a ready smile, wonderful laugh and a magnificent sense of humour. I am thankful to have known her and called her friend. She will live on in my guiding memories. Rest in peace, Doris.

Doris was a good friend for many years and introduced me to The Donway United after we met in the Osteoporous class which she held at the Better Living Centre. We always sat together at church and I took her home many times after the service.
Very sad to see her pass and will miss her but glad she enjoyed a long interesting life.
