In memory of

Dor Lai (Lu Ha) Poon

January 29, 1939 -  October 10, 2021

Dor Lai Poon, age 82, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2021 at Markham Stouffville Hospital, due to a sudden stroke. She was born in Yinpin, Guangdong, China on January 29, 1939.

Beloved wife of the late Larry Poon. Much loved mother of Jenny, John, and Patsy. Cherished grandmother of Joshua, Ethan and Samantha. Loving daughter of Chung Luen Woo and Shiu Kuen Tsang, and dear sister of Peter, Doris, Judy, Betty and Donna.

In her early years, Dor Lai loved going to school and meeting new friends along the way. She had a passion for fashion and even worked for a shop that provided professional intricate beading services. In the early 1960’s, she had the honour of beading a famous Taiwanese actress’s dress by the name of Lucilla Yu Ming, who won best actress of the year twice. Dor Lai was not only talented in beading, but she also had a knack for designing and making her own clothes, as well as knitting and crocheting garments and blankets. Dor Lai was always dressed to impress back in the day. She would visit the local salon every week just to get her hair quaffed to perfection with the latest trending styles. She also had a love of children, and taught them how to read and write in school. Music, dancing and reading Chinese novels was also part of her favourite pastimes.

As of recent, Dor Lai resided at Yee Hong Ho Lai Oi Wan Centre in Markham, where she made many close friends with the residents and staff on the 5th floor. She was a member of the Residents Counsel, which made her proud and gave her a sense of purpose when she was there. She would volunteer and make morning announcements to her fellow 5th floor residents about day to day updates, and she would always be eager to offer a helping hand whenever anyone needed it. There was also a little solarium down the hallway, which she was happy to be in charge of all the plants, including the ones in her bedroom.

During this challenging time due to the Covid pandemic, Dor Lai had managed to keep her spirits up by sharing her new favourite pastime with her friends. They would colour beautiful pictures and display them on the walls of the common room for all the residents and staff to admire. She would even print multiple copies for her younger sister and her granddaughter to colour with her on weekends. And speaking of weekends, Dor Lai would visit her daughter’s home every Saturday to play majong with close family and friends. We had some good laughs and we’re thankful to have spent this precious time with her.

Although she experienced struggles in her early days with a family of 3 children, she always managed to keep it together with a smile. There was never a day we would starve, as mom would have a delicious hot homemade meal on the table for us every day. She was a hard worker, but enjoyed life to the fullest and always appreciated the little things in life.

We love you mom, and will miss you so dearly. May you rest in peace with dad, grandma, and grandpa, and watch over us with a smile.

Please join us to celebrate Dor Lai’s life this Saturday morning, October 16, 2021 at 9:00am.
