In memory of

Donna Gillespie Gitt

March 12, 1933 -  July 25, 2017

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Donna Gillespie Gitt (nee Mills) aged 84, on Tuesday, July 25th, 2017 at Michael Garron Hospital.

Donna was predeceased by her cherished husband of 58 years, Manfred Willy Gitt (2013), and her loved brothers, David (2002) and Keith (2012) Mills, and brother-in-law Jürgen/George Gitt (1980).

She is survived by her pride and joy, son Rolf (Cassandra), and grandchildren, Bria Morgan, and Connor, and by her brother Bill and family. She will be missed by sisters-in-law Mary Mills and family, Joanne Mills and family, Joyce Gitt and family, Barbara Jurca of Germany, and brother-in-law Joe Gitt and family of California, and a strong group of dear friends.

Donna was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the second of four children of Olive and James Mills. While still a teenager, Donna moved to Toronto and worked as a Long Distance International Operator at Bell Canada. Donna returned to Winnipeg and worked at Monarch Wear in Clerical and Office Management positions. She met Manfred at a dance at the local YWCA, and she told us that she immediately knew he was the man for her. Manfred whole-heartedly agreed with her estimation of their suitability, and they married at 22.

While Manfred studied to be an Architect at University of Manitoba, Donna worked at Simmons Mattresses in Clerical/Accounting. When Manfred graduated they expanded their family with the addition of Rolf and began years of travel and adventures, living in Guyana and England and finally settling in Toronto. Donna worked as a Homemaker and later in Accounts Payable/Receivable at Clarkson-Gordon Accountancy Firm. Donna wrote engaging letters and postcards, sharing daily stories and experiences with friends and family in other provinces and countries.

Donna read widely and had strong political views which she shared generously and passionately. She believed in supporting women, educating children, and protecting the rights of all of people. She and Manfred collected books and art, listened to music and opera, and valued history.

Family and friends are invited to gather at Pine Hills Cemetery, 625 Birchmount Road, on Saturday, August 5th, 2017. Visitation is from 1 pm to 2pm; memorial at 2 pm, with reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers you may wish to consider a donation to Michael Garron (Toronto East General) Hospital, or the Royal Ontario Museum.

Donna was my brother's wife. When I was 17, I went to live with them in Winnipeg for a year . She was a wonderful big sister, helping and encouraging me in every way possible. We had the same black humour and enjoyed reading and going to the movies. After I left Canada we kept contact with letters. Donna was a wonderful writer, her lettters contained vivid descriptions of their travels. She showed her intelligence and knowledge when talking about politics. Donna was one of the most interesting people I have ever met and I am so sad that she is no longer with us.
