It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Donald Wilkinson, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. Donald departed this world on March 17, 2026 at the age of 95, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family at his home in Bowmanville, Ontario. His journey began on February 4, 1931, in the vibrant city of Manchester, England, where he was welcomed into the world by his loving parents, Donald and Sarah Wilkinson.
Donald’s life was a testament to dedication, love, and service. A proud veteran, he served as a Corporal in the Royal Signals of the British Army from March 1952 to April 1954. During his military service, he distinguished himself as a champion boxer, earning numerous awards and medals of honor. These years were a defining chapter of his life, and he often shared stories of camaraderie and resilience with those around him.
On October 5, 1956, Donald married the love of his life, Lorraine Anne Byrne. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising three sons—Don, David, and John—whom they nurtured with boundless love, encouragement, and empathy. Donald’s legacy of compassion and understanding continues to thrive in his sons and their families.
Donald found great joy in his work as a soap maker at Yardley of London and Lever Brothers, where he was not only a dedicated employee but also a passionate advocate for his colleagues as the Union President for Yardley and the Teamsters. His pride in his work was evident to all; he often remarked that he would "skip to work" because he enjoyed it so thoroughly.
Beyond his professional life, Donald was a pillar in his community. As an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion and a beloved soccer coach at St. Andrews Soccer Club, he touched many lives with his leadership and camaraderie. Known for his quick wit and infectious smile, Donald was a master storyteller who loved sharing jokes and reminiscing about his past adventures.
Donald was a devoted family man, deeply loved by his sister Anne, brothers Alan and Arthur, his sons and their spouses—Don (Aurora), David (Anita), and John (Lindy)—as well as his cherished grandchildren Sarah, Katherine (Johannes), Samantha, Rachel (Nathan), Hannah, Lindsay, Melanie, Sydney, and his great-grandchildren Foster and Daisy. Each of them carries forward his legacy of love and wisdom.
A celebration of Donald's remarkable life will be held at Pine Hills Cemetery, located at 625 Birchmount Road, Scarborough, Ontario, K1K 1R1. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at Glen Hill Strathaven for their compassionate care, describing them as angels during Donald's final days.
In honor of Donald's memory, let us celebrate the laughter he brought into our lives, the stories he shared, and the love he gave unconditionally. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten, as his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew him.
