In memory of

Devinder "Dev" Sarin

March 5, 1939 -  December 19, 2023

SARIN, DEVINDER (aka Dev) March 5, 1939 - December 19, 2023. It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Devinder Sarin, a beloved son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. Devinder was a devoted husband to Sheshi for 58 years, whom he affectionately called “Bi'' and she in turn called him “Ba”. Devinder was a loving father to son, Sanjay (Shalni) Sarin and daughter, Geetu (Richard Gervais) Sarin. His greatest joy was being Nana-ji to his grandson Devin and Dada-ji to his granddaughters Shayna and Saniya. Devinder will be dearly missed by his brothers Krishan (Kamal) Sarin, Garish (Promilla) Sarin, sister Neeru (Chand) Singh, brother in-law Mahesh (Madhu) Chander, and his many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Devinder was born in Talagang, India to the late Sohan Lal and Lilawati Sarin. He was predeceased by his brothers Narinder (Veena) Sarin, and Ramesh (Sadhana) Sarin. Devinder received his B.Tech from the elite IIT in Kharapur, India and his Masters of Applied Science in Mining Engineering (MASc) from the University of British Columbia. He was a professional engineer (P.Eng) and worked at Vale (Inco) for 30 years and travelled globally, working in mining consortiums that provided immense professional satisfaction for him. Following his retirement from Vale, and not one for resting on his laurels, Devinder embarked on a career as a commercial real estate agent. Moving on from his days in real estate, Devinder traveled to India and spent time in an ashram, where he completed his training to become a certified yoga instructor. He loved teaching the yoga principles and breathing techniques to his fellow condo residents and would hold complimentary classes that were always well attended.

Devinder was a deeply spiritual man who held the Hindu teachings close to his heart and would often officiate religious ceremonies for his family and friends. Through his countless acts of generosity and selflessness, Devinder demonstrated a deep respect and compassion for all who knew him. He was a kind and gentle soul, with an infectious smile that could light up a room.

Devinder lived and worked for most of his professional life in remote Northern communities, including Gander (NFLD), Stewart (BC), Sudbury (ON), and Thompson (MB). As a man who valued family and friendship over anything else, he cherished the simpler way of life and the closeness of the community that came with small town living. Devinder, the philanthropist and service-minded individual, embraced opportunities to give back to his community, and did so serving as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Thompson General Hospital, and as a member of the Lions Club. In recognition of his exemplary humanitarian service, Devinder was presented with the foundation’s highest honour, the Melvin Jones fellowship award. Before long, Devinder himself was appointed Lions Club President (Thompson, Manitoba) whereupon through his selfless actions, he continued to demonstrate good citizenship in service of others.

Upon his arrival in Canada, Devinder always felt a deep connection and sense of gratitude toward his adopted country. He was so enamoured with his country and grateful for the life it provided him and his family that he wrote and published a book called, ‘A Canadian’s Ram Raj’. The book details his journey as an immigrant to Canada, building a life with his family in this great land of opportunity.

To his family, his greatest accomplishment will always be the way in which he fulfilled his duties and responsibilities as the family’s patriarch. A second father to many, he was a source of unconditional love and acceptance, understanding, guidance and wisdom, and for that we will be forever grateful. Upon his departure, Devinder found solace in the embrace of his cherished family—a blessing that granted him well-deserved comfort, peace, and love.

Words of Remembrance & Cremation will be held on December 30, 2023, at the Meadowvale Funeral Centre, 7732 Mavis Road, Brampton, ON, at 11:00 am. A reception will be held at the conclusion of the ceremony. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a charity close to your heart, as Devinder supported many charities. Our heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and PSWs who supported him on his journey.

For those who are unable to attend the funeral service in person, a livestream link will be made available (on this page) 15 minutes prior to the start of the service.

I know the couple a long time back. The one incident that I never forget is that he surprisingly visited my restaurant in Sudbury to have Dosa !! I was not aware of his visit to Sudbury that time as they were away somewhere Manitoba or so!! I talk about that with him often when I visit them in most of my walking days nearby their place!!

He will be missed sorely. I have known him for a few years and it was always very pleasant to talk to him. He kept a ready smile on his face and kind words on his lips.
I offer sincere condolences to his wife and family.
