In memory of

David Lee

October 10, 1924 -  December 29, 2018

David Lee passed away peacefully on December 29, 2018 at the age of 94. Born in Shanghai, David started a new life in Ontario as a young adult, receiving Master's degrees in music and education. He went on to serve as the beloved music director at Adam Scott Collegiate and Vocational Institute from 1961 until his retirement in 1989. He was also a beloved member of Peterborough's Dixie Cats band. David Lee developed the high school's music program, instructing hundreds of students over the years with kindness, humour, and dedication. Under his directorship, the acclaimed Marching Scotties went on to perform across Canada and the US. A caring and passionate teacher, he will be remembered for instilling in his students a love for music, and for helping his family members begin new and better lives as immigrants to Canada. His immense generosity will be remembered by his nieces and nephews, and by the many family members whose lives he has touched. He is predeceased by his wife Eva Lee, and survived by his son, Richard Lee, his grandson, Evan Lee, his nieces, Karen, Cyndi and Angie Lee, Ruby Hou, his nephews, Warren Chant and Peter Hou, and his sister, Lu Min. A celebration of David's life will be held on Friday, January 4th from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., at Elgin Mills Funeral Centre, 1591 Elgin Mills Road East, Richmond Hill, Ontario.

I was sorry to read of Mr. Lee's passing. Quite simply, he was one of the best teachers I ever had. I know that I share that sentiment with probably hundreds of others. Mr. Lee was absolutely dedicated to his students and gave us experiences - both through music and the band trips - that we will never forget, and which greatly enriched our lives. I wish I had written to him to properly thank him, but I was able to tell him once that he had instilled in me an ongoing love of music, after a concert at Roy Thomson Hall, where he was singing with a choir - The Mendelsohn Choir, I believe. We talked for a while afterwards. I was certainly NOT his most talented student but he truly was one of the best teachers at Scott.

To Richard - please accept my condolences. I lived around the corner from you, on O'Carroll, and was often next door visiting the Gillespies. I saw how much your father loved you and was involved in your education as well that of his Adam Scott family. Another memory I have - which I think is accurate? - is seeing your father gliding around town in that massive car - a big grey Chrysler with fins?

All the best to you and your relatives and, again, my condolences on your loss.

David Lee was a ray of sunshine in the Peterborough school system. I have early memories of him coming to my elementary school and playing many different instruments for us. As I got older and became a serious musician, Mr. Lee was always so supportive and respectful. He never made me feel like I was a kid who didn’t know what I was doing. I’m happy to see he lived a very long a productive life. Sending much love to his family, and I will never forget him.

I am very sorry for your loss. I didn't know Mr. Lee well, but he came to my school as the coordinator for Musichord - during the 80's! - and I remember what a kind and gracious teacher he was, as well as what a gifted teacher of music. I hope there are lots of teachers like Mr. Lee still out there!

David Lee was the most inspiring music teacher for hundreds of us during our high school years. His ability to teach a love of music was exemplary, his leadership with the marching band, the jazz combo, our stunning Scottish kilts, the fundraising, organization of our performance at EXPO 67 and travels to New York have left deep and lasting impressions for us all. Heartfelt thoughts and thanks to the David Lee family for a beloved teacher and a life well lived.
Sincerely, Sheila Perry, Ottawa
