In memory of

David Grant Walters

October 14, 1960 -  July 2, 2023

David Grant Walters, Electrical Engineer (1983), MBA (1989), Chartered Financial Analyst (1999), Army Officer, Sailor, Skier, Novice Guitar Player, passed away in Toronto, Ontario on July 2nd, 2023 at the age of 62. Dave was born in Iserlohn, Germany, at an American hospital, on a Canadian Army base. He was the first born of David J. Walters and Tannis M. (Edgar) Walters.

Dave grew up with two adoring sisters, Robyn and Nancy Walters. The family experienced seventeen moves due to their father’s military career. They spent time in Germany, the U.S and various cities in Canada. Dave graduated from York Mills Collegiate Institute in 1979. He then attended Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC and “the best university in Kingston”, Royal Military College (RMC). He pursued an Electrical Engineering degree and graduated in 1983. During this time, Dave made many lifelong friends with whom he stayed closely connected to throughout his life.

Dave became a Communications Officer in the Canadian Military and was stationed in Halifax and Petawawa. He was then posted to Cyprus for a 6-month UN peacekeeping mission. Following his military career, Dave attended the Ivey School of Business at Western University and graduated with an MBA in 1989. He subsequently obtained his CFA and pursued a career in finance.

Dave’s marriage to Monique Symons, on July 18, 1992, was a beautiful and happy one. They raised their two wonderful children, Alison and Sarah, in Lawrence Park, Toronto. Dave was always a family-first guy. His girls were the most important people in his life. He was a much beloved son-in-law to Al and Rosemary Symons and was the “favourite uncle” to his seven nieces and nephews, Max and Samuel Coen, Thomas Penteado, Lauren, Justin, Liam and Rhys Symons. Moreover, Dave was always the person who taught children in the extended family to ski, skate, sail and swim.

Travel was an important part of the Walters' family life. Dave enjoyed many trips to visit his parents in Maple Bay, BC as well as annual March Break trips to Bonita Beach, Florida with his in-laws. Dave travelled with family to Hong Kong, China, Cambodia, Italy, New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and many other destinations across Canada. Following his knee replacement, he also enjoyed yearly ski trips with his oldest friends to various resorts across Canada and the US.

Dave was an active member of the Royal Canadian Yacht Club for more than 30 years, participating in countless regattas and mid-week race nights on his beloved J24,”Toxic Avenger.” He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Military Institute, where he was a proud member of the Treble Victor Group.

Above all, Dave valued family, friendship and adventure. He was a super-connector, keeping in touch with people for years, always reaching out if he was passing through their town. Dave genuinely cared for people and would remember specific details about you and your family. He prioritized experiences over material goods.

Dave will be remembered with love and affection by his loving wife, devoted daughters, caring sisters, his large, close knit family and his many friends and colleagues.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honour of Dave to the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre at https://donate.sunnybrook.ca/tribute.
