In memory of

David Alan Wilson

August 15, 1950 -  July 5, 2022

With great sadness we announce the passing of David Alan Wilson on Tuesday July 5th, 2022, at his home in Toronto.

Born August 15th, 1950, in Toronto, David developed a love for design and typography that led to a very accomplished career as a graphic artist spanning well over 40 years. As a connoisseur of good design, David was never hesitant to pass judgement on logos, book covers, album covers, posters and many other areas of printed material. Everything – good or bad – was worthy of a comment!

After studying design and painting at Sheridan College, David apprenticed for several years in traditional graphic design and communications studios including his first job as a copy boy at the Globe and Mail. Later, David worked on a wide range of projects including art director of magazines, periodicals, photo shoots, posters, and promotional and advertising material.

He was the Art Director of Canadian House & Home Magazine, The Financial Post Magazine, The Financial Times of Canada, was the start-up Art Director of the National Post's Weekend Post and served as Associate Art Director on Saturday Night Magazine. He worked as a designer on numerous others.

David’s main area of interest was poster design and had long been involved in the Toronto theatre scene designing many successful posters for productions at Theatre Passe Muraille, The Canadian Stage Company, Mercury Theatre and the Festival International de Mime de Montreal.

David later taught typography as a sessional instructor at OCAD University.

Above all else, his greatest joy was being at the cottage in the Haliburton Highlands with his Chestnut canoe, Martin guitar and trusty pal Dexter, a beautiful tricolour rough collie.

David will be much missed by his brothers Robert and Mark, nephews Tura and Mike, niece, Stephanie, former-partner Luz Lim and countless– friends and colleagues.

A memorial will be held at a later date to honour David’s memory

Brothers are like sisters and partners in our lives, we will keep them close. They will always remain in our hearts and our souls and our minds. We feel lucky that we could share in their joy, their sorrow and be grateful that they were apart of our lives. I am truly saddened by the loss of your brother, David. May his wings take him to the highest level and you can be sure that he will be watching over you and your family.
Peace at last. Barb Bjarnason

Even though I haven't seen David in many years, the announcement of his passing left a large hole in my heart.
He was one of the first people I met, along with Bother Rob and Greg Stevens, when I first arrived in Toronto. Since I was working at The Fiesta, I got to spend a lot of time with David, when he came downstairs from the art studio for a cup of coffee and a break from his projects, just shooting the breeze. He was one of the first people that made me feel welcomed to my new hometown. I appreciated his sense of humour, his common sense way about him as well as his style of art in graphics.
Even though we hadn't seen each other in years we would pass the odd note to each other on Facebook which would maintain our casual friendship which meant a lot to me.
I count myself quite lucky to have know David and will miss that he is no longer with us.

Lise Creurer (Neighbour, Sultan Street Co-op)

David was my neighbour for just shy of 20 years here “on the sixth” of the Sultan Street Co-op. I have fond memories of our many conversations about design and guitars over the years, and his familiar greeting of “hey, buddy” whenever we met at the elevator or on the street. Wicked smart and always quick to turn a phrase or to offer interesting observations, he will be missed. Condolences to his two brothers and Luz.
