Daniel passed away on December 2024 at Wellbrook Place West LTC. Predeceased by his wife Daisy May (Miss Daisy) in1997. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Joan Patricia (Frank) Buttigieg, his grandson Cameron Buttigieg and his many relatives & friends in Canada, U.S., England and the West indies. He was the youngest and only surviving child of Isaac Thomas Moorhouse and Marian (Jackson) Moorhouse. Also predeceasing him are his nine siblings, Mabel, Edgar, Charles (Feddy), Isaac Jr, Theodore, Alice, Katherine, Gifford, William (Baboo).
Born in Orange Hill (parish of Trelawny-Montego Bay), Jamaica to a labourer from England and a native Jamaican. Daniel started his career in the Hospitality Industry as a young man with a grade 6 education. He worked in many prestigious hotels in Jamaica, Barbados and St. Lucia as a waiter. His charm, sense of humour and strong work ethic caught the attention of his employers and tourists. He was most proud of meeting and working with the stars and crew of the movie "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" in 1954. He rubbed elbows with the likes of Walt Disney, Kirk Douglas, Peter Lorre and other stars of that era. They liked him so much that they gave him a non-speaking role in the background scene dressed like a native from India. He got into the habit of requesting autographs from all of the guests -not just celebrities. Some left not just their names, but their phone numbers and addresses as well.
One of his employers (a very influential hotelier named Gene Hooks) became his mentor and friend. Gene wrote a letter to the first Prime Minister of Jamaica (Alexander Bustamante) praising Daniel and another employee. This friendship was very influential in Daniel migrating to Canada in 1964. His wife and daughter joined him in Regina, Saskatchewan the following year. He worked as a Maitre D, Manager and in other positions, always in the Hospitality Industry. He and his family eventually moved to Hamilton and then Toronto in 1968.
When he first arrived in Toronto, he had the experience of getting a ride in the CKEY News station Helicopter. This and winning a motorcycle from the Heart & Stroke Lottery (while in his late 80’s) were a thrill he never forgot. He also became a big fan of the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team from their days at the CNE stadium to their current home at the Sky dome (Rogers Stadium).
He worked at a few establishments in Toronto but lastly at The Sheraton Center Hotel until his retirement at the age of 65 where he fondly earned the nickname “Antique” from his co-workers. There while working under Hans Gerhardt, he served Leaders of Countries (including Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau) & many other dignitaries. He and his co-workers were at the top of their game when it came to hospitality. At one event he was asked to dress up as a Canadian RCMP and proudly did so.
In the last several years of Daniel’s life, he resided at Oakville Senior Citizen Residence in Oakville, ON. There he was independent with little support. Lots of social activities but his favourite was sitting in his special chair in the lobby watching and talking with passersbys. He would cross the street to buy his lottery ticket, go to Tim Hortons, or take the bus to the liquor store. When he could no longer do so, he would ask fellow residents to do his errands for him, unbeknownst to staff and family. Daniel was still walking with a cane until the age 96, even though he was strongly advised to use his walker after contracting pneumonia one year prior, at the age of 95.
Over the years he overcame many challenges & also dealt with a lot of disappointments, but his legacy is laughter, love & kindness. Sadly, Daniel had a Stroke in November 2020 while in the Oakville Trafalgar hospital, for a non-related health issue. Miraculously he came back to life! First, he was at "End of Life', then he was moved to “Palliative Care” and then he was " Ready to be Released" from hospital! Unfortunately, Daniel was not the same person, but he continued to improve with time, getting his voice back. However, days of just lying in bed weakened his muscles. The challenges of Covid, Staffing issues and now Dementia made his fight an uphill battle.
Daniel was moved to a Long-Term Care home (McCall Cente-Toronto) temporarily from February 2022 to December 2023. His final year was at the Wellbrook Place West LTC-Mississauga from December 2023-December 2024.
The family would like to thank all caregivers (PSW''s, Nurses, Social Workers, Doctors, Cleaning Staff, Mangers, Dining Staff-OSCR, Volunteers) that assisted him in his last years. Thanks for laughing at his jokes and listening to his stories. If he offended anyone, please forgive him for his dementia and fear of losing his independence sometimes made him feel defenseless, helpless and afraid. By nature, he could also be very stubborn.
In leu of flowers and in honour of Daniel, donations to the Oakville Senior Center Residence, 2222 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville, Ontario, Canada E Transfer-email (donations@oscrservices.ca) or the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be greatly appreciated by the family
In a final act of kindness, Daniel has donated his body to science. His body was donated to Medical Science (University of Toronto-Department of Anatomy) as per his wishes. The University will hold their own ceremony for families at a later date.
He loved his rum, Lobster, Curry Goat, racehorses, the Toronto Blue Jays and in late years, trying for that big win through lottery tickets. Most of all, he wanted to be respected and in turn respected those who respected him.
In one of his autograph books, he wrote the following words:
" I shall pass through this world but once. Any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again" - D.A.M.
