In memory of

Cynthia Rhea Evadney Re

July 14, 1932 -  January 29, 2022

Surrounded by the love of her family, Cynthia passed away peacefully at home, as she had wished, in her 90th year. Predeceased by her loving husband of 41 years, George Victor Re, and her brother Gilbert. Cynthia is deeply missed by her elder sister Greta, her children Lisamarie (Gillian), Jennifer (Jean-Pierre) and David, her adored grandsons Alek and Emile and her nieces, nephews and their families. Cynthia’s family and friends spanned the globe: she is remembered by her husbands’ family in Italy, family in the UK, lifelong friend and travel partner Brigitte in Germany, Lourdes in Etobicoke, and many others in Quebec, Florida, California, Sweden, Switzerland, Brazil and beyond.

Cynthia was born in Bath, Jamaica and attended St. Anthony’s Academy before her first job as a receptionist at Radio Jamaica. She was the first in her family to move to Canada in 1955. While working as a switchboard operator at Canada Packers, she met her husband George in 1958 on the bridge at Centre Island. Cynthia told us “it was love at first sight” and our hearts are warmed that they are now reunited.

Like many of their generation, Cynthia and George shared a strong work ethic and built a successful hardware business together. They met many fascinating people in the trades and as customers – some of whom became long-time friends. They valued the kindness of neighbours and always looked for an opportunity to help others.

Cynthia was most joyful working in her garden, decorating her home, sewing and mending anything that was brought to her, travelling whenever and wherever she could, sharing old-time stories (always truthful) and talking with EVERYONE. She made friends everywhere she went, was generous of heart, readily shared her opinion, was the first to offer and accept an invitation, and the last to leave a party.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the many people who cared for Cynthia in her last few years. Particularly the dedicated healthcare staff at Credit Valley Hospital, the supportive team at The Village of Erin Meadows - Retirement Home, and the hard-working community homecare team.

Funeral Mass and Interment will take place on Saturday February 5th. A celebration of life will be planned when the weather is warmer and we can gather with friends and family to share fond memories, food and music.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Cynthia’s memory to any of her preferred charities, or one of your own choosing:
• Canadian Cancer Society
• Trillium Health Partners Foundation, Credit Valley Hospital
• Operation Smile Canada
• The Scott Mission (Toronto)
