In memory of

Craig Vance Shields

December 14, 1944 -  October 9, 2023

Craig Vance Shields passed away peacefully in Thornhill, Ontario on October 9, 2023. He was born in LaPorte, Indiana, on December 14, 1944, but lived his formative years in Southern California. Craig's life was filled with adventure, creativity, and dedication to the service of others.

Craig attended the University of California at Berkeley and UCLA. His education and training would later guide his professional choices, which were as diverse and multifaceted as he was.

Craig's years as a Peace Corps volunteer, and as an Anthropology professor at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, helped him develop the skills he needed in his role as a Human Services Consultant. Prior to consulting, he managed a children's mental health centre in Ontario, and served as a senior policy analyst with the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services.

Craig was a man of many interests, each of which added a unique aspect to his personality. He was an avid fisherman and traveler; hobbies that allowed him to connect with nature and find tranquility.

Craig's creative, gentle, and thoughtful nature was evident in all aspects of his life. He was a humanist at heart, always striving to support and understand those around him. Craig was a remarkable man, and he will be deeply missed.

Craig is survived by his partner Helen McLean and cherished daughters Deirdre and Tess. He is preceded in death by his wife, Blanche (d. 1974), mother of Deirdre. Craig will be sadly missed by his siblings: Burk, Malinda (Mindy), and Colin (Kent).

Family brought him great joy, and he cherished his time with them. He leaves behind a legacy of love, wonderful stories and memories, and a multitude of "My Favourite" lists.

A private graveside service will be held at the family's request. A Celebration of Life for family as well as friends and colleagues will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Craig's name to the Canadian Cancer Society or the "Ding" Darling Wildlife Society (Sanibel Island).

Craig’s obituary describes him so perfectly. Since our retirements, Craig and I would meet regularly over coffee or FaceTime. our favourite topic being the political situation in the United States. I will definitely miss these discussions, as I will Craig.
My sincerest condolences to Helen, Deidre and Tess. My thoughts are with you.

Craig was definitely one of a kind and one of the most brilliant men I have ever known. We first met in 1st grade, 73 years ago, at Reseda Elementary School in the San Fernando Valley. We both had a lifelong interest in sports especially following all athletics with the UCLA Bruins. He also was an avid LA Laker and LA Dodger fan.
For me, this is a huge loss and Craig will forever be in my thoughts. RIP big guy!

I first met Craig on the basketball court in the early 1980s. In the hundreds of games we played together I marveled at his skill, hustle and commitment to team play. Our friendship quickly expanded to discussions of politics, history and family. I will miss Craig's calm and thoughtful nature. I admired his love of nature, humanity and kindness.
My deepest sympathy to his family. He will be missed.
