IN MEMORY OF COLETTE JANEV, March 8, 1933-March 4, 2026
In her 93rd year, with her daughters, Helen, Nelly, and Christine, by her side, Colette Janev died peacefully. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Assen, her parents Albert and Madeleine Roussel, and her older siblings, Germaine, Micheline, and Gerard. Colette was loved by her grandchildren: Daniel (Shawna), Jacqueline (Adrien), Sofia (Andrew), Emile, Olivia (Blake), and Marcus. She was GG to great grandchildren: Hadley, Hudson, Levi, and Ethan. Colette lived with independence, great love of family, and courage to her end.
She was born in Paris and met the love of her life while attending university. She and Assen were married on October 29, 1955, and emigrated to Canada in 1957. She worked as a public health nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital after completing accreditation at the University of Toronto. She later became a full-time mother.
Family activities always included lots of time spent outdoors. Walks along the Toronto waterfront, in James Gardens and in High Park have become family traditions and always include feeding wildlife. The family cottage on Georgian Bay in Lafontaine was enjoyed by all and sailing, kayaking, and swimming were the highlights.
Colette and Assen enjoyed their retirement years, spending winters at their condo on Marco Island and hosting family and friends.
They loved having adventures and traveled extensively in Europe, Russian, China, Japan, African, and South America. Colette climbed Kilimanjaro when she was 70 and hiked the Grand Canyon with Assen by her side.
When they were at home, ballroom dancing was their passion. Starting with lessons in the 1980s they built a wonderful community of friends. Colette enjoyed the Tea Dances until she was 92 but really missed her dancing partner.
Colette lived life to the fullest and leaves behind a rich legacy that includes love of family, and the outdoors. A Celebration of Life has been scheduled for Sunday March 8, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m. 1535 South Gateway Road, Mississauga ON, L4W 5J1.
