Our beloved mother, Chui Wah Chiu, rested peacefully on March 27th , 2024, at AgeCare Woodhaven Long Term Care Residence in Markham, at the age of 92, with her children by her side.
Mom was born March 15, 1932. She grew up in rural China during the war years, and lost her father at a young age, ending her education, and endured much hardship. She married our father, Mr. Kam Yuen Mak (predeceased) in 1949, and later moved to Hong Kong in 1958, where their family size grew, and she worked very hard to take care of her 11 children’s day to day lives, while her husband ran a print shop business. In the 1988 they immigrated to Canada with their children. She loved the natural beauty and space of Canada and once described the country as “Heaven” to her. She adhered to traditions, and focused on caring for the family. She always wished that she could have received a proper education, and believed that every daughter and granddaughter could reach their potential had they been given the chance. To her own children, she gave each one preferential treatment, as she said, “everyone is different”! She enjoyed growing vegetables in her garden, making delicious food for her family, and watching their grandchildren grow. She also enjoyed going out for dim-sum. She was a caring and loving mother and grandmother, gentle yet hard working, happily serving others, friendly to those she met, honest, thoughtful and considerate. It’s no wonder that many of these traits are evident in her children and grandchildren.
She will be greatly missed by all her family members, including her eleven children: Chi-Ching (Lai Kuen Cheng) Mak, Josephine Mak, Chi-Sheung (Mei-Mei Wong) Mak, Portia (Dai Hei) Lo, Yesha (Wilson) Cheung, Chi-Yi Mak, Queenie (Raimond) Wong, Cedric (Jenny Ma) Mak, Adam (Peggy Chow) Mak, Nelson (Joyce Tam) Mak, and Aubrey (Percy) Tong; and eleven grandchildren: Kelvin (Po Wing So) Mak, Isabella (William) Ng, Eric Mak, Steve (Allison Luk) Lo, Jess (Bob) Leung, Kent Cheung, Jane Cheung, Dickson (Lisa Hui) Wong, Jason Wong, Carol Mak, Julia Mak; and eight great-grand-children: Micah Mak, Curtis Mak, Sean Mak, Chloe Ng, Lillian Ng, Andris Lo, Harris Lo, and Caleb Wong.
Visitation will be held at 9 AM on Friday, April 12, 2024, and funeral at 10 AM, at: Eglin Mills Cemetery, Cremation & Funeral Centres, 1591 Elgin Mills Road East, Richmond Hill, ON, CANADA, L4S 1M9.
