Christopher Everton Brown (Chris) was born on April 16, 1966 in Kingston, Jamaica. He was always proud to remind others that he was a “real Jamaican,” and remained proud of his roots even after moving to Toronto in 1972.
He was a practical joker whose presence, voice, and laughter could be heard no matter where he was. Because he was a big kid at heart, he was always the favorite uncle amongst nieces and nephews. He was known for his energetic spirit and living his life as authentically as possible, which sometimes got him in trouble but his way with words didn’t keep him there for too long. He was an extremely proud father and grandfather. His children were his pride and joy.
Whether it was his innocent nature as a child, being one of two Canadian players selected to try out for the Raptors in the 90s, to rescuing his bird Corey later in life—who quickly became his best friend with wings—it’s safe to say Chris was a kaleidoscope, a person made up of different sides and bright colours. He had a passion for music that was contagious. He enjoyed artists such as Johnny Osbourne, Public Enemy, and Grand Master Flash just to name a few. We will miss all his random outbursts of his favourite songs.
His passion for cars acted as more than just his livelihood, it was how he connected with his community, helped family members, and built long-lasting friendships — if it had wheels and an engine, you could bet he knew about it.
When he wasn’t enjoying the ‘slow ride home’ on his bike, you could count on an evening phone call from him checking in on anyone and everyone, calls now that we will all surely miss.
Left to cherish his memory are his parents Davine and Clifford Brown, his seven brothers, his five children, his two grandchildren Kyrie and Kaine, his many close friends and members of the local basketball community who knew him fondly by his nickname “Jabbar”. His memory will live on in all of us.
